Drag path. For forensics, it is a physical trail left behind when an object or person is dragged across. Yet, the funny thing about life is how reality is often cemented in the abyss of one’s identity — far from what the naked eye can see.
In metaphors, a drag path is the trail left behind by the unforgivable sufferings one has endured. It is the damage left behind by all the soiled imprints marked by those who have scarred our skins until its very flesh bleeds for mercy.
And as the blood continues to stain the drag path we have so long crawled on, this act of anguish forces itself to be cleaned from guilt and cloaks itself in innocence.
Yet, to wash the hands of those who have sinned against us is no different from being given liberty to those who have executed the body and soul I once lived in before dragging me in this silent route of shame, grief, and agony.
The death of one’s spirit is the death of one’s physical body as well, and in any universe, repentance is never enough to pay the cost of reviving a dead body. In whatever lifetime you continuously seek and travel, the life you’ve dragged into the fathomless pit of misery can never be brought back to light.
But, the cruelest evidence of a drag path is how its traces remain even when the dragging has ceased. It is found in the most abrupt yet subtle moments of a person. It is engraved in how they now awfully perceive the world to be, how carelessly they touch themselves, how heavy their breathing becomes, and how suicidal their souls evolved into.
It becomes something they live with as though nothing simply happened and they force to bury it in whatever dark place they find.
The drag path becomes an inheritance of mental suffering, passed on by survival and never by choice and internal freedom.
So, ask they cloak themselves in purity and innocence, far from the burdens they’ve entrenched upon us, may we become reminded that we can never fully restore the smooth path we were once accustomed to. The drag path seen beneath our feet might be too difficult to erase. Yet, no matter the path, the pain, and the memories we try to suppress, defiance is within reach.
After all, we are not a body meant to be dragged in misery.
We are meant to be whole. Whole in a sense that though pieces might fall, we are able to regain what has been lost in us. In the end of the day, all we have is ourselves to hold and salvage. Thus, save oneself until there’s time for you to do so.
And just like all endings, one may begin to wonder where the dragpath might come to an end and where one’s tranquility might finally begin. Yet, maybe there is no clear boundary between the two.
Perhaps healing comes when our wounds have become noticeable scars that serve as a landmark of our unsaid stories and it is in that moment when suffering ceases to become a shadow that follows us behind. It settles within us, intertwining itself with the person we’ve subtly became along the way.
“I dug my heels into the gravel As evidence for you to unravel A drag path etched in the surface Can you find me?”
In that singularity, one tends to ask:
Were we ever walking the drag path or had the drag path been walking us?
