Are you worried about getting prostate cancer or being one of those guys who’s up all night peeing? And today we’re talking about the 8 foods that research links to prostate problems consistently.

And the last one is something you might be taking every single day without even realizing it.

If you guys are interested in learning more about an enlarged prostate, download my free guide with everything you need to know about prostate health and preventing an enlarged prostate. Before I get into it, there’s one thing you need to know. Individual foods don’t directly cause prostate problems.

What matters is the metabolic environment those foods create over time. Specifically, how many of these foods lead to what’s called metabolic syndrome, which is a group of conditions like high blood pressure, insulin resistance, elevated blood sugar, abnormal cholesterol, and obesity.

Now, getting these conditions is primarily driven by diet, and multiple studies show men with metabolic syndrome have a 50 to 70% higher likelihood of being diagnosed with high-grade, clinically significant prostate cancer, as well as enlarged prostate.

Now, these foods can affect your prostate in three main ways.

#1. They lead to insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia

When you have chronically high insulin, it’s basically like a growth signal.

And it tells your cells to proliferate or multiply, but it also prevents other cells from breaking down, and this can lead to tumor growth and ultimately put you at risk for cancer.

#2. They cause high blood pressure

Now, men with high blood pressure or hypertension have larger prostates, have worse urinary symptoms, and higher rates of aggressive prostate cancer.

#3. They lead to chronic inflammation

When you have obesity and metabolic dysfunction, they create basically a low state of chronic inflammation, which promotes both enlarging prostate and cancer progression.

So, what foods should you avoid?

1. Fried foods

Now, guys, I love a good fried food as much as the next person.

But this data actually made me think twice. A 2015 meta-analysis found that men who had more fried food had a 35% higher rate of prostate cancer compared to those who ate the least.

Now, these foods are dense in saturated and trans fat, which drives insulin resistance, inflammation, and weight gain.

2. Repeatedly Heated Cooking Oils

Now, there is a massive difference between oils heated once, which you use at home, and oils that have been reused multiple times, as you get at the restaurant.

So, when you cook with fresh oil at home, most of the oil retains a lot of nutrients, like vitamin E, polyphenols, and antioxidants.

But when that oil is heated repeatedly, like I said, which they do very often in restaurants and fast food establishments, the chemistry of the oils changes.

It essentially creates harmful compounds in that oil, including free radicals, free fatty acids, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. These are carcinogenic compounds.

The oil itself changes, too. It becomes thicker and darker, and its smoke point drops, which means it starts releasing smoke or toxic fumes at lower temperatures.

And the oil loses all those beneficial nutrients I talked about earlier. Now, our multiple reviews have found associations between large consumption of these repeatedly heated oils and an increasing incidence of several cancers, including prostate cancer.

Now, guys, when you go out to eat, restaurants, street vendors, fast food chains, they’re often using these frying oils three to six times before discarding them.

And so, every time you order those chicken wings or the French fries, they’ve been through multiple heating cycles.

So, my suggestion is to limit deep-frying foods, especially from restaurants where you can’t control the oil quality.

And when cooking at home, don’t reuse frying oil multiple times.

3. Food is Processed Meats

Like bacon, hot dogs, deli meats, sausages, and jerky.

Guys, I love a good hot dog just as much as the next person, but they do have some of the strongest evidence linking them to prostate cancer.

Multiple studies show what is called a dose-response relationship. The more processed meat you eat, the higher your risk.

**But why are these more risky? **So, when food companies process meats, they add nitrates and nitrites, and these chemicals are there for a reason.

They keep the meat looking pink and fresh and prevent dangerous bacteria from growing. But once they enter your body and are exposed to high heat, they can damage DNA and become carcinogenic.

They also have really high amounts of sodium, which puts you at risk for high blood pressure, and they also cause inflammation and have saturated fat, again contributing to that metabolic dysfunction.

Guys, when talking about meat, there’s a nuance that we don’t talk about enough.

It’s not just what meat you eat, but how you cook it. When you cook animal proteins at very high temperatures, when you’re charring them on a grill, blackening them in a pan, or deep frying them, they form carcinogenic compounds like heterocyclic amines and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

These are established cancer-causing compounds. So, a piece of red meat, when you’re going to eat it, if it’s cooked gently, braised, or stewed at moderate temperatures, is very different from the same meat that’s heavily charred on a grill.

Guys, I love a good piece of charred meat as well, but you've got to limit it a little bit to prevent your risk of cancer.

So, ideally, try not to have those processed meats very often. When you eat red meat, try to eat it braised or cooked gently, avoid charring the meat, and try to avoid well-done preparations.

Also, there’s some evidence that maybe marinating the meat before grilling it might reduce the formation of those heterocyclic amines, those carcinogenic compounds.

4. High-Fat Dairy

High-fat dairy does show a modest association with increased prostate cancer risk, but there is some nuance to it.

A 2023 meta-analysis found about a 2% increased risk for every 200 g of milk daily, and 3% for 50 g of butter daily.

Now, these are small percentages, but prostate cancer is already the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in men worldwide.

So, small percentages can lead to big changes. Now, not all dairy is equal. Guys, let me say it again, not all dairy is equal.

Whole milk and yogurt don’t show any significant association, and actually, they may be protective. The concern is for the highest fat dairy products, like butter and cheese.

And interestingly, for low-fat milk in some studies. And *the mechanism involves IGF-1*, an insulin-like growth factor produced by these specific types of dairy.

So, it elevates IGF-1, and when men have higher IGF-1, they have an increased risk of prostate cancer. And that ranges from 9% to 38% higher in the highest groups that consume the most of that type of dairy compared with the lowest groups.

But take it with a grain of salt. Men who consume dairy might be more health-conscious, and they’re more likely to get screened for prostate cancer.

So, we might be finding more prostate cancer in this group because of this bias. I generally say, “Look, moderate high-fat dairy intake, butter, cheese, cream, don’t do too much of it, and absolutely include things like yogurt and even whole milk.

5. Sugar-Sweetened Beverages

Sodas, energy drinks, sweet teas, fruit drinks, they have a ton of added sugar.

I know you guys have seen those where people show you how much sugar is in one can of Coke, and it is insane. So, all this sugar then drives insulin resistance.

Where your cells basically stop responding normally to insulin, and that means your pancreas has to produce more and more insulin to control blood sugar.

This then leads to insulin levels that are chronically high and hyperinsulinemia. Now, when you have hyperinsulinemia or a lot of insulin in your blood, that’s associated with aggressive prostate cancer.

And the data would suggest that men, particularly those under 65, who ate the most hyperinsulinemic diets, meaning ones that are high in refined carbohydrates like white simple carbs, sugary fruits, and processed starches, have an 18% higher risk of high-grade prostate cancer and a 22% higher risk of fatal prostate cancer.

Insulin is fundamentally a growth hormone.

Meaning it’s going to cause cells to multiply and prevent cells from dying, basically leading to tumor growth over time.

And liquid sugar is particularly problematic because it hits your bloodstream so quickly, and the insulin response is faster, and then the volume obviously tends to be higher than people realize.

So, they’re drinking a lot of sodas, and they may not even think of it because it’s not filling them in terms of satiety.

And again, multiple studies show strong associations between sugary drinks and prostate cancer, even more so than solid sugary foods. So, if there’s one change with the fastest return, it’s cutting liquid sugar.

6. Alcohol

Now, alcohol is not only a concern for prostate cancer, but it can also worsen symptoms of an enlarged prostate.

Alcohol is basically a diuretic, which means that you make more urine than you put in. And so, when you have mild prostate symptoms, you have mild enlargement, now you’re making more urine, which is going to make your urinary symptoms worse.

And guys, by the time men are 60 years old, about half of them have at least some degree of enlarged prostate.

So, when you have an enlarged prostate, you have symptoms like going to the bathroom often or more urgently, or you’re waking up more often at night to pee.

And so, when you drink alcohol, and in some cases caffeine as well, which is not negative in terms of health in other ways, but for your urinary symptoms, it can absolutely make it worse.

Now, there’s also a dose-response relationship between how much alcohol you drink and your risk of prostate cancer.

Now, specifically with prostate cancer, the more you drink, the higher the risk, particularly if you’re drinking more than two alcoholic beverages a day.

However, any alcohol consumption actually puts you at risk for some different cancers. So, really, generally speaking, if you are not really attached to your alcohol intake, I would recommend stopping it. Otherwise, minimize it as much as possible.

7. High Salt or Sodium Intake & Ultra-Processed Foods

And these actually go together. High sodium is related to getting high blood pressure. And basically, high blood pressure is independently associated with an increased prostate cancer risk.

In 2016, they did a meta-analysis that found that men with high blood pressure have an 8% higher risk of prostate cancer overall.

But even more important than that, men with high blood pressure were more likely to have aggressive disease. Prostate cancer can be a nuisance disease, or it can be a very aggressive disease.

And if you missed my podcast with Dr. Scott Agner, we talked about this in detail, and he’s a brilliant, wonderful human being, so please check that one out.

There was a study out of Reykjavik, which is the Icelandic capital, that followed 9,000 men who were born anywhere between 1907 and 1935, on average, for 25 years. So, we have great data.

And those who had midlife high blood pressure had a significantly higher risk of advanced prostate cancer, high-grade disease, and fatal prostate cancer, even when controlling for how much they weighed.

Another study found that men who had a systolic blood pressure over 150, the top number, increased the risk of prostate cancer by 35%, and 49% increased mortality after diagnosis, meaning dying after you get the diagnosis of prostate cancer.

High blood pressure also puts you at risk for an enlarged prostate or BPH. Men who have high blood pressure have larger prostate volumes and ultimately worse urinary symptoms.

And here’s where the ultra-processed food comes in. The primary source of sodium isn’t actually adding salt to your foods; it’s the ultra-processed food.

Things like packaged meals, canned soups, deli meats, pizza, condiments, and restaurant food. There is so much sodium.

And so, I generally recommend, guys, look at what you’re buying, especially the condiments, because there’s so much sodium in them that you might not even realize that you have a high salt diet.

And now, the one that surprises people the most.

8. High-Dose Calcium Supplements

A lot of guys take calcium supplements for bone health, especially as they age.

But the research says that there might be a link with how much calcium you take and prostate cancer. So, in 2025, just last year, a meta-analysis was done that found that high calcium intake is associated with increased prostate cancer risk.

For every 300 mg per day you increase your intake, you get a 2% increased risk. And if you increase your dietary calcium by 300 mg per day, you get a 6% increased risk.

And again, the association shows a stronger link with advanced and fatal prostate cancer.

In *the Health Professionals Follow-up Study*, which is a big study, men who had calcium intake more than 2 g per day had nearly a 2.5 times increased risk of fatal prostate cancer compared to guys eating 500 mg per day.

Both dietary calcium and supplementary calcium, independently of each other, increased the risk. And the theory behind this is that it might be because of vitamin D.

When you have really high calcium intake, it suppresses the activation of vitamin D. And vitamin D protects cells from proliferating or multiplying, especially in the prostate tissue.

And again, this is with really high total calcium intake, particularly when the supplements push the intake above 1.5 to 2 g or 1,500 to 2,000 mg per day. And here’s the issue.

So many people take supplements that have multiple ingredients in them. And so, when you look at the back of those supplements, they might not even point out that there’s calcium in there, but it’s actually listed in the list.

And so, when you add up all the supplements that you’re taking, you might be taking too much calcium.

The most important thing I want you all to take away from this story is that no single food is going to give you prostate cancer. And cutting a single food out doesn’t guarantee that you’re protected from it.

Again, we’re talking about how your foods contribute to your overall metabolic environment. And these choices that you make create things like insulin resistance, high blood pressure, and inflammation, building up slowly and silently over the years.

And this is just one meal at a time, right? This is actually more modifiable than people think. You just make small changes over time. And actually, eating healthy does make a difference.

So, the data would suggest that plant-based dietary patterns, meaning having more plant-based foods, are associated with a 52% lower risk of prostate cancer progression.

So, if you’re diagnosed with prostate cancer, it’s less likely to get worse. And the Mediterranean diet, which is the most studied diet in medicine, is also associated with a lower risk of aggressive prostate cancer.

Tomatoes and tomato-based products, which are rich in lycopene, may also have some potentially protective benefits in terms of protecting you from both enlarged prostate and prostate cancer.

Cruciferous vegetables, like broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts, also help with metabolic health, and so can have ultimately beneficial outcomes from eating those.

Fatty fish provides omega-3s that can counteract the inflammatory damage by omega-6s in your diet. So, here’s one thing I want you to do after you read this story.

Bottomline

Before you go to the grocery store next time, I want you to look at the sodium content on five of the packaged foods that you buy most regularly.

This isn’t because sodium is the most dangerous thing that you’re eating, but it’s the most invisible one, and it will creep up on you. And for a lot of people, that 3 minutes you take to do that can be so eye-opening.

If you guys found this story helpful, do me a favor and share it with someone who needs it. Because evidence-based information about your overall health.

And the most important thing for me is that you guys understand the importance of taking care of your health, your sexual health, your prostate health, because you are absolutely worth taking care of.

And I have a really important announcement. There have been a lot of deepfake AI versions of me selling supplements on the internet.

They have been contacting people and telling them to chat with them and sell them these very expensive stacks of supplements.

And I want you all to know that I do not sell any supplements, I do not sell anything outside of my app, my course.

And if you ever want to know what I’m working on, you can go to learn.renamalikmd.com or check out my website, www.renamalikmd.com. Everything I am doing is on that website.

We are actually actively not taking patients. There is no way that someone is actually talking to me if you’re talking to someone on WhatsApp or any other format.

Please protect yourselves. There is so much going on on the internet right now. There are even people using deepfakes of me on YouTube, creating content.

There are deepfake doctors on YouTube giving you information that’s not accurate. So, please protect yourself.

This is a scary time. And as always, I’m going to take care of myself, because you are worth it.
