And What Happens After the First Half?

We don’t watch football. We participate in a modern ritual of belonging.

We don’t watch football.

Let’s be honest — just once — beyond the jerseys and flags. We are not watching a sport. We are participating in a modern collective ritual, sacrificing our nerves, our evenings, and sometimes our emotional stability to an inflated circle of leather.

They say football is life. A beautiful lie we repeat to justify the madness.

In truth, football is suspended life. It is the only place where society allows us to scream, cry, insult strangers, and embrace strangers — without anyone questioning our sanity.

In the stadium, or in front of the screen, we are no longer exhausted employees, worried parents, or tax-paying citizens. We become angry gods, biased judges, and hopeless romantics waiting for a miracle.

All within ninety minutes.

But the real question is not asked when the goal is scored. It is asked at halftime.

What comes next?

The first half is always full of faith. The coach is a genius. The new signing is the savior. The trophy is inevitable. “This season is different.”

This is the illusion of beginnings. And without it, we wouldn’t come back next week.

Then the second half arrives.

Injuries happen. Unexpected losses appear. The star ages. The management sells dreams and buys promises.

Passion slowly turns into habit. Habit into addiction.

Why do we continue?

Because emptiness is heavier than defeat.

We don’t fear losing as much as we fear the silence after the final whistle — that moment when there are no colors, no chants, no clear enemy to blame.

Football gives us a ready-made identity.

“I support this club.”

A short sentence that replaces the harder question:

Who are you… without the crowd?

We chase the ball the way we chase happiness. We know it will slip away at the last second, yet we keep running — because stopping would mean admitting we were not chasing the ball, but escaping something else.

So what happens after the first half?

We realize the result is not the point. What matters is that “we” do not lose to “them.”

The rival gives us meaning. Shared hostility unites faster than shared love.

Football is a distorted mirror of society. It reflects our tribalism, our bias, our blind referees, and our emotional extremes. But it also gives us rare moments of pure beauty — an impossible pass, a goal that silences a city, a child crying with joy after decades of waiting.

Those moments are the bait.

That’s why we return.

When the match ends — win or lose — ask yourself:

Did you gain anything besides higher blood pressure?

Maybe you did.

Maybe you gained the illusion of belonging — the feeling of being part of something larger than yourself, even if it’s just a game.

But here is the deeper truth:

The real story is not what happens in the second half. It’s that you came back to watch — even knowing the referee might be blind, the coach confused, and the ending unsatisfying.

And still… you sit. You watch. You believe. You rage. And you return next week.

Because at his core, the human being is not searching for victory.

He is searching for a reason to stay in the stands… instead of stepping onto the real field of his own life.

And here begins the hardest question of all the matches:

Are we cheering for a team… or are we cheering for ourselves so we don’t admit that we’re out of the game?
