How often do soldiers accidentally kill themselves with grenades?

I only knew one boy who died from his own grenade, but it was n’t an accident . His guerrilla unit had been surprised by an enemy attack , and having no other option to avoid capture , they activated a grenade near his head. Half his head was gone.

Grenades are usually infallible , and accidents are extremely rare . Even if you really miss, you usually have a few seconds to jump for cover.

The only time I’ve ever seen people nearly kill themselves with grenades was when alcohol was involved . We had an Italian volunteer in Bosnia who wanted to blow himself and everyone else up . Luckily , someone came along and took the grenade out of his hands.

The same goes for guns : relatively safe until a drunk comes along.
