My Bitaxe Hex 703 Died After 4 Months of Non-Stop Mining — Here’s My Full Diagnosis

What happens when your favorite little home miner suddenly goes dark? I tore it apart, tested everything, and learned a few hard lessons.

Four months. That’s how long my Bitaxe Hex 703 ran 24/7 without any major issues. Then one day I came home from work, opened Hashwatcher, and saw it was offline. When I walked into the mining room, the fan was just twitching. Not a good sign. I immediately thought I’d lost another Meanwell power supply. Thankfully, that wasn’t the case this time.

Step 1: Rule Out the Power Supply

I pulled everything to the workbench and did the basics first. Multimeter on the Meanwell — solid 12.13V. Then I checked the 4-pin EPS connector going to the miner. Still good voltage. Plugged it back in… and the power supply immediately started cycling on and off. Classic symptom of a dead short.

Taking It Apart I disassembled the unit looking for obvious damage — burnt components, melted traces, swollen capacitors. Nothing. The ASIC chips looked pristine. No visible signs of failure at all.

That’s when I started forming two main theories:

Theory 1: The Bitaxe Hex 703’s Design

The Hex 703 pushes six ASIC chips through a single set of power delivery components, specifically the TPS voltage regulators. These things run hot — so hot the manufacturer actually glues a heatsink on them. It’s not an ideal setup for sustained 24/7 operation.

Theory 2: I Might Have Killed It

I was running a 3-way fan splitter on one header. The fans pulled roughly 1.95 amps total. That’s a heavy load for a fan header. Combined with an already power-hungry board, it’s possible I pushed it over the edge.

(I’m not an electrical engineer — I’m mostly self-taught from GitHub repos and YouTube — so take this with a grain of salt.)

Thermal Camera Diagnosis

I bought a TopDon thermal imaging camera specifically for this. The moment I plugged the miner in:

  • The TPS regulator started heating up immediately
  • Half the ASIC chips began pulsing (you could see them lighting up on thermal)
  • The other half stayed cold
  • The power supply kept cycling

It was both fascinating and frustrating. A clear short, but only affecting part of the board.

The Reality Check

I’m 43 years old. I’ve been a mechanic for 20 years and a tow truck driver for 5. My hands are not steady enough for fine SMD soldering on a board this small. I’d probably destroy it trying to fix it myself. So instead of pretending to be a hero, I’m doing the smart thing: sending it to ixTech, a veteran-owned repair shop in the US. They charge a $25 diagnostics fee (which I fully support — good diagnostics aren’t free).

Final Thoughts

The Bitaxe Hex 703 is a fun little machine, but it has clear limitations. If the community or future versions could get better power delivery (more TPS regulators or upgraded components), these could be seriously solid little miners.

For now, I’m hoping ixTech can bring it back to life. I’ll make a follow-up video when I get it back.
