Four Korean Dramas for Your Watch List ~ A Mixed Bag of Genres

If you’re a K-drama newbie and don’t know where to start, try these Korean dramas.

(1) **Delivery Man | Viki Original Korean Drama Series**

A taxi service for ghosts?

Seo Young Min (played by Yoon Chan Young), is a cab driver who discovers that he can see and hear ghosts. These wandering souls are unable to leave this world because when they departed this life, they had some unfinished business. He starts a service where he picks up these lingering souls and helps them finish what needs to be done so that they can be delivered to the afterlife.

It proves to be a profitable business endeavor. Only …? His first ghost passenger is Kang Ji Hyun (played by Minah). Her problem is not so easy to solve because she has no memory of who she is and why she ended up in his taxi cab. But she does prove to be a valuable assistant, and with her help, Seo Young Min can help his other ghost passengers pass on to the next world.

(2) **Business Proposal | Netflix Korean Drama Series Based on Webtoon**

Stay calm. It’s a fake marriage proposal. But a real business proposal.

Kang Tae-moo (played by Ahn Hyo-seop) is the president of Go Food. His grandfather is dissatisfied. Not with his job performance. But because Tae-moo is married to his job, rather than getting married and producing grandchildren. The grandfather insists that he go on blind dates until he finds a woman to marry.

Jin Young-seo (played by Seol In-ah) is an heiress to her father’s fortune, and he constantly tries to arrange the “perfect marriage” for her by making her go on blind dates. She avoids all of her arranged blind dates by sending her best friend in her place.

When Shin Ha-ri (played by Kim Se-jeong), Young-seo’s best friend, pretends to be Young-seo, she behaves shamefully. The blind date is scared away, and thus, a marriage never takes place. This plan always works! EXCEPT …

Kang Tae-moo is set up to go on a blind date with Jin Young-seo. Shin Ha-ri appears, pretending to be her best friend, and is certain that her outrageous behavior will scare him away. Instead, Tae-moo proposes marriage to her. YIKES!!

Shin Ha-ri just has to pretend she will marry Tae-moo in front of his grandfather. Shin Ha-ri is no longer a fake blind date for her best friend; she’s a fake future spouse for some rich guy. From this point forward, their relationship gets very complicated.

(3) **Our Blooming Youth | Historical Period Korean Drama**

A noble lady disguised as a eunuch? A logical explanation. She’s a fugitive.

The two main characters in this historical period K-drama are: a crown prince who is cursed and a noble lady who has been framed for the murder of her family. Her father’s dying words to her were: “Protect the crown prince”. Even though she’s a fugitive on the run, she must find a way to connect with the crown prince.

Crown Prince Lee Hwan is played by Park Hyung Sik; and Lady Min Jae Yi is played by Jeon So Nee. She enters the palace disguised as a eunuch and secures a position as the closest servant to the crown prince. He gives her the name Go Soon Dol. The crown prince knows her real identity, but everyone else knows her as Eunuch Go. Lady Min Jae Yi, or rather Eunuch Go, is very good at crime-solving. The crown prince believes he is being haunted by ghosts. She assures him that what he believes is a curse is nothing more than treacherous humans trying to deceive him with the end goal of removing him from the throne.

• Min Jae Yi was going to help the prince prove who was behind the curse.
• The crown prince would, in turn, help her prove her innocence.

(4) **Under the Queen’s Umbrella | Korean Historical Period Drama Series**

I pity the person who pushes the “Mama Bear” button.

In the palace, the king’s women are considered special because they can bear the king a son. Queen Im Hwa-Ryeong (played by Kim Hye-Soo) has been very fortunate. She gave birth to five (5) sons for the king. Her oldest son is the crown prince, but he is suffering from a life-threatening illness. He could die any day! If he were to die, who would take his place? Surely one of her other sons should succeed. Not if the king’s mother or any of his women have their way.

Before Queen Im Hwa-Ryeong, there was another queen who was deposed. She also bore the king many sons. However, the king’s mother poisoned her first son and had her remaining sons slaughtered like animals. She shared her experience with Queen Im Hwa-Ryeong, and the retelling of her story was enough to cause Queen Im Hwa-Ryeong to go into full-blown “Mama Bear Mode”. Kill all of her sons? Not if she can help it! Her sons will not suffer the same fate as the sons of the deposed queen.

Imagine. One Mama Bear up against corrupt officials, the king’s ruthless concubines, and a cut-throat, hateful mother-in-law, the Queen Dowager. She took all of them on. At least her husband, the king, was on her side. After all, they’re his sons too!
