CYBER SECURITY AS A JOB

CYBER SECURITY AS A JOB
Does cybersecurity seem confusing? You’re not alone. Let’s break it down step by step and make it easy to understand.
When I first got into cybersecurity, I thought it was all about stopping cyberattacks. Who stops you? Cyber security people. How do they do away with them? I really didn’t know. I just figured they pressed some big red “STOP HACKERS” button somewhere.

But after I started learning cybersecurity, I realized it’s a lot like being a doctor. Before that, I thought everyone just “stopped hackers.” Then I discovered there are specialists everywhere: penetration testers, SOC analysts, incident responders, threat hunters, and more. It’s like walking into a hospital and realizing not every doctor is a surgeon! Just like in a hospital, where every doctor has a different specialty, cybersecurity also has different professionals handling different responsibilities. “Different responsibilities? Like what?” Great question! Let me break it down for you.
1. Before we dive into anything else, it’s important to understand the difference between hackers and ethical hackers.

A thief and a security inspector may both know how to get into a building. The difference is that the security inspector has permission and is there to help, while the thief is there to cause harm. The same idea applies to hackers and ethical hackers.
Similarly, in the world of cybersecurity, both hackers and ethical hackers know how to find and exploit weaknesses in computer systems. However, their intentions are very different.
Hackers use their skills without permission, often to steal data, gain unauthorized access, disrupt services, or cause harm.
Ethical hackers, on the other hand, use the same skills with permission from the system owner. Their goal is to identify security weaknesses, report them responsibly, and help organizations fix them before malicious hackers can take advantage of them.
In simple terms, a hacker finds a weakness and exploits it for personal benefit, while an ethical hacker finds the same weakness and helps make the system more secure.
2. Cybersecurity Is More Than Just Security It’s a Collection of different roles.
At this point, you might be wondering, “Do people in cybersecurity all do the same job?” Not at all!
Cybersecurity is a vast field with many different roles, each focusing on a specific task. Some professionals look for vulnerabilities, some monitor networks for attacks, some investigate security incidents, and others build secure systems from the ground up.
Just like a hospital has doctors with different specialties, cybersecurity has professionals with different areas of expertise. Together, they work to keep systems, networks, and data safe.

Now, let’s take a look at some of the most common roles in cybersecurity and what they do.
4. Not Everyone in Cybersecurity Does the Same Job
1. Penetration Tester (Pentester)
A penetration tester is an ethical hacker who tries to break into systems, applications, or networks with permission. Their goal is to find security weaknesses before malicious hackers do and help organizations fix them.
2. Security Analyst (SOC Analyst)
A security analyst monitors networks and systems for suspicious activities. They are often the first people to notice a cyberattack and work to investigate and respond to security alerts.
3. Incident Responder
When a cyberattack occurs, incident responders step in to contain the attack, investigate what happened, and help the organization recover as quickly as possible.
4. Threat Hunter
Threat hunters proactively search for hidden threats that may have bypassed security defenses. Instead of waiting for alerts, they actively look for signs of attackers inside a network.
5. Security Engineer
Security engineers design, build, and maintain security systems. They create the defenses that help protect organizations from cyber threats.
6. Malware Analyst
Malware analysts study malicious software such as viruses, ransomware, and trojans. By understanding how malware works, they help organizations defend against it.
7. Digital Forensics Investigator
Digital forensics investigators collect and analyze digital evidence after a security incident. Their job is to uncover what happened, how it happened, and who may be responsible.
8. Bug Bounty Hunter
Bug bounty hunters independently search for vulnerabilities in systems and applications. When they find a valid security flaw, they report it responsibly and may receive a reward from the organization.
Each of these roles has different responsibilities, but they all work toward the same goal: keeping systems, networks, and data secure.
Conclusion
If you’ve made it this far, you now know that cybersecurity is much more than just “stopping hackers.” It’s a diverse field filled with professionals who specialize in different areas, from finding vulnerabilities and monitoring networks to investigating cyberattacks and building secure systems.
When most people hear the word “cybersecurity,” they often imagine a person in a dark room typing rapidly on a keyboard. In reality, cybersecurity is a team effort, with many different roles working together to protect systems, organizations, and users from cyber threats.
The best part is that there is no single path into cybersecurity. Whether you enjoy problem-solving, investigating incidents, building secure applications, or ethically hacking systems, there is a place for you in this field.
As a beginner, don’t worry about learning everything at once. Focus on understanding the fundamentals, stay curious, and keep learning one step at a time. Every cybersecurity professional started exactly where you are today — with questions, curiosity, and a desire to learn.
Welcome to the world of cybersecurity
