Who is a good person?

Let’s delve into two traits.

Before we cite two characteristics of a good person, let’s try to understand the nature of being good or bad. The quality of good and bad is subjective, which means what you might regard as good, others might not. For instance, one partner for one lifetime can be seen as a good monogamous relationship for some, while for others, one partner at a time could be a sign of good monogamy.

In other words, it depends on a person’s perspective, which is either shaped by social ethical values or individual discipline. Yet there must be some universal parameters across cultures as a sheer marker of being good. That is what we imply when we say, “They are good people.” What traits do they bestow that make them good?

The first trait is that they do not harm others. Hurting others physically or verbally (i.e., mentally) is a sign of evil. Hence, a good person has the potential to be violent but chooses non-violence over and over again.

Secondly, on the contrary, they help others when they see them in distress. They might go out of their way to help others or their loved ones.

Of course, we can add more qualities to the list. Yet these two will remain the basic traits of a good person. So, if you see someone possessing these two qualities, and not pretending to exhibit them, then assume them to be good.
