أَفَتَطْمَعُونَ do you have any hope تو کیا امید رکھتے ہو تم

أَن that کہ

يُؤْمِنُوا they would believe ایمان لے آئیں گے وہ

لَكُمْ in you تم پر

وَ though حالانکہ

قَدْ indeed یقیناً

كَانَ there is ہے

فَرِيقٌ a faction ایک گروہ

مِّنْهُمْ among them ان میں سے

يَسْمَعُونَ who listen to جو سنتے ہیں

كَلَامَ the word کلام

اللَّهِ of Allah اللہ کو

ثُمَّ then پھر

يُحَرِّفُونَهُ they change it بدل دیتے ہیں اس سے

مِن بَعْدِ after اس کے بعد

مَا what جو کچھ

عَقَلُوهُ they had understood it وہ سمجھ چکے تھے اسے

وَ and اور

هُمْ they وہ

يَعْلَمُونَ know جانتے ہیں

أَفَتَطْمَعُونَ أَن يُؤْمِنُوا لَكُمْ وَقَدْ كَانَ فَرِيقٌ مِّنْهُمْ يَسْمَعُونَ كَلَامَ اللَّهِ ثُمَّ يُحَرِّفُونَهُ مِن بَعْدِ مَا عَقَلُوهُ وَهُمْ يَعْلَمُونَ

Afatatmaoona ai yuminoo lakum wa qad kaana fareequm minhum yasmaoona Kalaamal laahi summa yuharri foonahoo mim badi maaaqaloohu wa hum yalamoon.

Do you, the believers in truth, desire the unbelievers to bewlieve you? There was a group among them who would hear the word of God and understand it. Then they would purposely misinterpret it.

اے (مسلمانوں) کیا تم یہ توقع تررکھتے ہوکہ یہ (یہودی) تمہارے کہنے سے ایمان لائیں گے حالانکہ ان میں سے ایک گروہ ایسا بھی گزرا ہے جو اللہ کا کلام سنتا تھا اور ہھر اسے سمجھنے کے بعد دیدہ و دانستہ اس میں تحریف (رد وبدل ) کر دیتا تھا۔

آیا انتظار دارید به (آئین) شما ایمان بیاورند، با اینکه عده‌ای از آنان، سخنان خدا را می‌شنیدند و پس از فهمیدن، آن را تحریف می‌کردند، در حالی که علم و اطلاع داشتند؟!

मुसलमानों क्या तुम्हें उम्मीद है कि ये यहूदी तुम्हारी तरह ईमान ले आयेंगे जबकि उनके असलाफ़ (बाप दादा) का एक गिरोह कलामे ख़ु़दा को सुनकर तहरीफ़ कर देता था हालांकि सब समझते भी थे और जानते भी थे

Kan dere håpe på at disse vil tro dere, når en del av dem allerede har hørt Guds ord, og så forvrir det etter at de har oppfattet det, enda de vet bedre?

Pooya Ali Commentary:

People who are not aware of the truth readily become believers when they see the light of truth, but those who know the truth and yet deny it remain disbelievers.

The Jews and the Christians of Arabia were expecting the advent of the Holy Prophet, in view of the prophecies made by Musa, Isa and other Prophets, (see Baqarah: 40), therefore, they used to warn the pagans:

“Wait! The promised one comes and punishes you all for your wickedness”.

Their attitude towards Islam, before hijrat, was not hostile, if not friendly, but as the influence and the power of the Muslims increased, they stopped talking about the prophecies mentioned in their scriptures and prevented others from referring to them.

Though yuharrifunahu here means misinterpretation and not any material change in the wording, yet it is proved that the pre-Islamic scriptures had been misinterpreted (tahrif ma-nawi) as well as tampered with by omission, addition, and substitution of letters, words and sentences (tahrif lafzi), as mentioned in the Encyclopaedia Brittanica and the periodicals published by the Watch Tower Society. What has been discovered today after extensive research by independent scholars has been disclosed by the Quran in this verse.
