Most headlines about artificial intelligence in medicine focus on diagnostic imaging or support for medical decision-making. However, Mayo Clinic, a global leader in innovation, has just made a move that redefines the implementation priorities of the Digital Health sector. Through a strategic partnership with Abridge, Mayo Clinic is shifting the weight of innovation to where the healthcare system is bleeding the most, toward nursing staff.

From the perspective of Operations Management, nursing is facing the greatest productivity challenge in its history. Studies indicate that nurses spend up to 35% of their working time documenting activities, instead of providing direct patient care. This is a classic “bottleneck” in the daily work of healthcare, regardless of country or profession.

“Nurses tell us they’re spending a lot of time in documentation-often finding a computer screen and keyboard in between them and the patient,” said Cheristi Cognetta-Rieke, Vice Chair, Nursing -Enterprise Practice Transformation, at Mayo Clinic. “That takes away from the relationship-based care they really want to provide.”

Generative AI and “Ambient Intelligence” will become a remedy for this problem

Mayo Clinic’s collaboration with Abridge is based on generative AI technology that works in the background, ambiently. This tool listens to interactions between the nurse and the patient and generates structured clinical notes in real time. This is intended to be a breakthrough, a way out of the deepening risk of burnout among nurses and the elimination of “after-hours work” on documentation. The second important element is attention to Data Quality. AI-generated notes will be more complete and synchronized with the actual course of the visit, which minimizes the risk of medical errors. Most importantly, the solution is designed to integrate with the existing EHR system, which enables rapid implementation across the entire Mayo Clinic network.

Building solutions with the user, not for the user

The key to the success of this project is co-creation and human-in-the-loop. Mayo Clinic did not buy a ready-made off-the-shelf product, despite many ready-made products on the market. Mayo nurses are actively involved in training the algorithms so that AI understands the specific nursing workflow, which differs from the medical one. This is a User-Centric Design approach on a macro scale, which drastically increases the technology adoption rate.

I read Mayo Clinic’s move as a very positive signal to scale more broadly and more boldly those solutions that support nursing care. In 2026, investors and hospital boards must understand that the greatest return on investment (ROI) in technology does not come from replacing specialists, but from automating the most burdensome, repetitive administrative processes.
