The Masonic Identity Theft: How a “Translation Error” Created the Regular Grand Lodge

If you ever thought history was written only through great battles, you were wrong. Sometimes, a single, intentionally mistranslated court document is enough to redirect the course of events. This is exactly what happened to Serbian Freemasonry in an operation that turned suspended members into internationally recognized “leaders.”

Operation “Translation”: Becoming What You Are Not

Since the original Grand Lodge of Yugoslavia (GLY) continued its regular work after 1990, the coupists from Rimini faced a legal hurdle: they couldn’t get a new charter. The solution was found in a bureaucratic stunt at the Federal Ministry of Justice.

A “small oversight” was made. In the official translation of the registration decree intended for foreign lodges, it was written that the Grand Lodge of Yugoslavia itself had requested a name change to “Regular.”

  • The Forgery: Foreign lodges read the translation and believed it was the same organization simply changing its name.
  • The Truth: The original decree lacked the founding date of June 23, 1990. A brand-new association was formed, “borrowing” someone else’s history.

The English Seal on a German Rashomon

A decade later, in 2001, the United Grand Lodges of Germany managed to achieve the unthinkable: recognition from the United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE) for the so-called “Regular” Grand Lodge.

This was the tipping point. In the Masonic world, London’s recognition is the “gold standard.” No one questioned the 1993 translations or the Rimini coup anymore. This recognition became a magnet for hundreds of new members — from actors and artists to ambitious politicians who saw the lodge as a shortcut to power.

The Agent of a Thousand Faces: Arnold Herman (alias Dragulesku)

Proof that this was not just about Masonic prestige but a serious intelligence game lies in the figure of Arnold Herman. A key operative for U.S. intelligence in the Balkans, based in Bucharest, he entered Serbia and Montenegro like a ghost:

  • Once as Georgiju Joanesku, another time as Stefan Dragulesku.
  • Always with a new passport, a new profession, and always with valid Yugoslav documents provided by the local “services.”

The irony is absolute: some Masons recognized Herman from the battlefields of the Republic of Serbian Krajina (RSK), where his contributions under the name Dragulesku were directly linked to the tragic fall of that territory. The man who presided over the collapse of Serbian lands also presided over the “rise” of the new “Regular” Masonry in Belgrade.

Epilogue: Propaganda Over Enlightenment

On these “winds in their sails,” today’s Regular Grand Lodge of Serbia has become a mass organization. It is filled with people misled by a propagandistic image of power and influence. The temples are packed with those who know nothing of the events of 1990 or the intelligence games in Rimini.

History has been rewritten, identity stolen, and the “Light” in the lodges today shines only as bright as the foreigners who mistranslated a document thirty years ago allow it to.

Serbian Freemasonry today is not a society of secrets, but a society with a well-hidden shame regarding its own origin.

Epilog: Propaganda umesto prosvetljenja
