Imagine, if you will the following scenario.

You’re 16. You go to a private school that’s basically invite-only. Your friends, Abbie and Kayleigh, are there, talking about who they want to marry. Both seem excited for it — and like others in your class, they already have an idea of who they want to marry.

People have chirped about you getting with Alex*, a blonde guy who’s been looking at you. Of course, you realize, deep down, that he might not be your husband. It’s not because he doesn’t like you. It’s not because you’re going to mature and date other guys, either.

It’s because you already are fairly aware that you’re expected to marry your cousin Jason*. He’s 25. And you’re expected to marry in a couple of months. So, you sigh, and you feel a little pang of sorrow over the life you could have had with Alex.

Of course, Alex is also your cousin. As well as your half-brother. You share a mom. But that’s okay, because, well, that’s just how things are supposed to be, right? It’s not ideal, but you deal. You have to keep sweet.

Fast forward two years.

You’re at home, giving birth to your first child. You’re 18. You’re scared. Your family and religion would not allow you to go to a hospital, even though you’ve been unable to shake the feeling that something isn’t right with your baby.

Alex is nowhere near you. He’s having fun with his other wife.

Birth is scary. The pain is excruciating. After a final scream and a tear, the gasp from your midwife says everything: something is horribly wrong. The baby is missing his ears. It’s not making any noise. You call an ambulance, which takes you and your newborn to the hospital.

The doctors take your baby. You go home, never to return. You don’t speak of the baby. If anyone asks, it was a stillborn. It wasn’t, but you say it was. You’re horrified but you can’t talk about it. You keep sweet.

Because you know no one will come to save you.

Welcome to the Kingston Clan, the “polygamous mafia” of Utah. It’s also known as “the Order” and the Davis County Cooperative Society (DCCS).

The Kingston Clan is an incest, white nationalist cult.

I’m not going to mince words. Every polygamous cult has an incest problem, primarily because the dating pools are so small that you basically have to choose a distant cousin if you want to have a spouse of your own religion.

However, even among other polygamous cults, the Order takes things to a crazy high level. In the Order:

• You have to marry another member of the Kingston family, even if you don’t have the Kingston name. The Order believes that they are the people who are ordained by God to have pure blood and lead the people. So, you have to keep the blood pure. And that means lots of cousin (and sibling) marriages.
• You have to be white to join. I did a deep dive on this, and apparently the Order theoretically does allow converts. You have to be white to join, though, and they will ask you for massive amounts of money to do so if you are a man.
• You have to work in a business that is owned by the Order. What makes the Order so freaky is that they have a lot of companies in the area they operate. You cannot be in the Kingston Clan and work among outsiders. You’re not allowed.
• You have a bank account that is issued by the cult’s own bank. They also teach you how to read your bank statements as a child, because they make them purposefully hard to read. This is done as a way to prevent investigators from seeing the paper trail.
• You are not allowed to go to a hospital. Hospitals mean mandated reporters. Mandated reporters mean CPS visits, which means a potential raid.
• Men are given wives as a reward. Most have a minimum of three. Most of the girls in the cult are married off by or before 18. Because they are related to the boys they’re marrying, they often know who they will marry.
• No birth control is allowed under any circumstances. They only recently started doing blood tests to prevent certain diseases in their kids. Still, almost all (if not all) children in the Order are products of incest.

In the Kingston Clan, they make it hard for women to leave no matter what the circumstances. And yes, the act of childbirth is a Handmaid’s Tale type of experience.

Polygamist cults are bad for a number of reasons, but it’s the genetic problem that may be the worst.

I’m not going to get into how polygamous cults tend to groom little kids, sexually traffic women, or abuse the shit out of everyone. That’s obvious and fairly common knowledge. Cults are going to cult.

However, polygamous cults tend to be very dangerous for another reason that most other cults don’t experience: incest. Incest is basically built into the fabric of polygamous cults, even if it wasn’t originally part of the program.

It causes genetic bottlenecks.

In religions that encourage or require plural marriages, the ratio of men to women gets thrown off. Humans naturally give birth to roughly equal percentages of men and women.

If a religion requires a man to marry three women each, that will start to cause issues when it becomes apparent that not all men will mate. Those men’s genetic material drops off the face of the earth. Meanwhile, more and more babies grow up with crazy numbers of half-siblings.

In one generation, it doesn’t show much. After five or six generations, the impact becomes clear. You run out of potential mates that aren’t a half-sibling or cousin. Your genetic line starts to become more and more unmixed, leading to a lot of negative recessive traits popping up.

As the Habsburg dynasty of Europe proved, incest is bad and causes your family tree to die out. Even if your family was mostly healthy at the start, incest can and will catch up.

Every generation of inbreeding causes higher infant mortality rates and higher cancer rates. What we’re seeing in cults like the Kingston Clan, FLDS, and to a lesser extent, the Amish, is a veritable genetic time bomb.

The Kingston Clan, much like FLDS, is experiencing serious birth defect rates as a result of their beliefs.

I went on a major rabbit hole the other night, listening to cult escapees and Utahns discuss their experiences with the Order. Apparently, in parts of Utah, hospital workers have noticed “Kingston babies” getting left at the hospital’s NICU — often left to die, as parents bail.

Per former cult members, some of the children who were born into the Order have issues like:

• Stillbirths. This is a known issue with all incest. Incest greatly increases the chance of stillbirths.
• Cognitive and psychological issues. One former member noted that schizophrenia and “hearing voices” is very common among men in her branch of the family.
• Being born without ears. To give you an idea, this particular birth defect is so rare, it clocks in at around 1 in 400,000. There have been several cases in which this occured in the Kingston family.
• Spina bifida. This is a classic spinal defect that is primarily caused by mutated genes from chemicals like Agent Orange or bad recessive traits. Doctors have already established this as a “Kingston baby disease.”
• Muscular Dystrophy. This, along with cystic fibrosis, often lead to an early death among Kingston family members.
• Fructose allergy. Also nicknamed “no sugar syndrome”
• Skyrocketing cancer rates. Once again, this is a sign of hereditary issues. However, the family’s tendency to ingest comfrey root drinks could also be a factor. Comfrey root is a carcinogenic and potentially teratogenic chemical.

The more I dove deep, the more I recognized how wildly bad the situation was. The higher the inbreeding coefficient is among people, the rarer the birth defects tend to be. When you have multiple kids born without ears as well as at least one without fingernails, something is pretty bad.

Polygamy is illegal, yet it still is openly practiced in parts of Utah, Colorado and Nevada.

You might be wondering how this is legal. The answer is that it isn’t. Yet it still happens. Here’s why and how.

“Freedom Of Religion”

A lot of the reason why police don’t really get into investigating cults like these involves the religious freedom clause in America’s Bill of Rights. There have been a lot of court cases dealing with the right to practice polygamy.

While polygamy is illegal and can be an arrestable offense, most law enforcement officers don’t want to get dragged through it.

No Hospitals, No Doctors, No Cops

For the most part, polygamist sects do not believe in hospitalization or medical care. This is because they have to deal with the risk of mandate reporters turning them in when a 12-year-old gets pregnant.

Order members and members of the FLDS are told to “handle things internally,” no matter how severe. They are so cloistered up that you would never be able to get a whiff of their internal meetings without serious help.

They’re trained from birth not to comply with the government. This is why the only time arrests happen is when women get sick and say the wrong birthday.

Money Talks

To no one’s surprise, being a cult leader means you have big money. Money talks and so does the opportunity to “consort” with a wife as a favor. Depending on the cult, what often happens is that the cult members slowly push others out of an area and elect their own leaders into positions of power.

This, plus owning businesses in the area, often will turn the cult into the major influence in the region. This is why Utah and Texas tend to have such lax consent age laws. It’s cult-related.

The money these cults have can be mind-boggling. For example, the Kingston Group has charges for scamming the US government out of almost $500 million. Crazier still, we don’t know how deep those pockets go.

After all, we don’t tax the churches in this shithole country.

Who’s Yo Daddy?

Perhaps one of the biggest things that keeps this shit under wraps is how they hide paternity. Hospitals would notice if the same last names would get written up for having a bajillion kids.

Many polygamists do what they can do quietly scuttle it by forging names on birth certificates. Doctors don’t ask questions in many parts of the nation, even when they should.

Most births do not happen in hospitals, especially if they’re teen births. This helps reduce the chances of getting molestation arrests.

Holy Guilt

Finally, there’s the biggest piece of the puzzle: compliance. If you’re raised to think that inbreeding is the path to God, you’ll always have that guilt if you leave the cult. Being raised that way has a very deep, profound effect on people.

Those beliefs, once ingrained, are very hard to shake.

So, every generation gets a little worse, more deeply entrenched, and a little sicker. Because that’s what God (and the church) seems to want. Sick, isn’t it?

These cults won’t go away until they’re forced to.

Tax America’s churches. Take away cult money. And for fucks’ sake, please rescue the girls who are being trafficked in these groups.
