Talk Session about Startup on BDC 2018

A week ago, I attended the Bekraf Developer Conference 2018 at Bandung. As a student, I’m very glad to have this chance. I meet 200+ developers around Indonesia. They are students, professionals, and communities. I also have a great chance to meet and discuss how creating a community with Sofian Hadiwijaya, CTO of Warung Pintar.

There are some points that noted during the conference. Here they are.

Never give up even you don’t know what are you doing, at least we don’t stop

Perusahaan rintisan, umumnya disebut startup (atau ejaan lain yaitu start-up), merujuk pada semua perusahaan yang belum lama beroperasi. Perusahaan-perusahaan ini sebagian besar merupakan perusahaan yang baru didirikan dan berada dalam fase pengembangan dan penelitian untuk menemukan pasar yang tepat.

The bolded text translated as “still on development and research phase to meet the right market”. For me, creating a startup is trial and error. If we don’t create one, we don’t know the response from the market. So just do implement the first idea, release to market, and wait from the response. The following development phase based on the market response. At least we not stop.

Test your assumption early and often

Asking for feedback from the market is the most powerful way to know what the strength and weakness of our product. By asking knowing the strength and weakness will help us to determine what next improvement we can do. We also can learn from others startup that has the same business model with ours. Learn from others mistakes is also a powerful way to prevent of doing the same mistake.

Don’t shot a fly with a cannonball

“Your startup is not Facebook that has users around the world”, said Sukan Makmuri, the CTOO of UangTeman. Facebook also never planning to target the user around the world before, you can read it here. Just release the MVP first, as long as it has fulfilled the market needs. The following tasks are asking feedback, analyze the feedback, redesign features, create improvement, and repeat.

Big thank for BEKRAF for organized the BDC 2018. I personally hope that others companies also organize conferences like BDC 2018, especially at cities outside Java. To be honest, students like me that live in the rural area is jealous of others students that live in big cities because they have more chance to attend the conference like this. The more conference like this held in big cities and the more chance they have and the less I have. Gapapa kan sedikit curhat? Hahaha
