What is Smart India Hackathon

Smart India Hackathon is a nationwide initiative by the Government of India to provide students a platform to solve pressing real-life problems using technology and innovation. Organized by the Ministry of Education’s Innovation Cell and AICTE, SIH brings together bright minds from all over India to tackle problem statements shared by various government ministries and private industries.

How Does SIH Work?

🔍 1. Problem Statements Are Released

Each year, a wide array of real-world problem statements is published on the official SIH portal by various government ministries, departments, and private sector organizations. These problems range across domains like education, law, healthcare, infrastructure, environment, and more — all aimed at driving technological solutions for India’s pressing challenges.

🏛️ 2. Internal Rounds at Colleges

Once problem statements are out, colleges conduct internal hackathon rounds. Here’s how it works:

• Students form teams (6 members).
• Each team selects a problem statement and proposes a solution.
• They present it through a pitch deck (PPT) and/or early prototype.
• College professors and experts evaluate ideas based on innovation, feasibility, and alignment with the problem.

💻 3. Submission to SIH Portal

The shortlisted teams’ ideas are then officially submitted through the SIH portal to the respective ministry or organization that owns the problem statement.

This is where your idea begins its national journey.

🏅 4. Top Teams are Selected

After a few weeks, each ministry reviews submissions and selects the top 5 teams per problem statement from across the country.

These teams are:

• Notified via email and the SIH dashboard.
• Assigned a Nodal Center (host college) for the finale.
• Given time (usually 3–5 weeks) to further develop and polish their prototype.

💡 Tip: This is the phase where real ideation, planning, and teamwork begins.

🧑‍💻 5. 36-Hour Grand Finale

The most intense and exciting part — the Grand Finale — takes place at different Nodal Centers across India. Each nodal center hosts around 20–30 finalist teams solving related problems.

• It’s a 36-hour nonstop hackathon, usually held in December.
• Teams arrive one day prior for orientation and setup.
• Over two days, teams build, refine, test, and present their solution under pressure.
• You’re provided with great food, Wi-Fi, power, and a lot of coffee.

🧑‍⚖️ 6. Multiple Rounds of Evaluation

Throughout the 36 hours, expert judges evaluate teams across 3–4 rounds, usually scheduled as:

• Round 1: Around noon on Day 1
• Round 2: Late evening on Day 1
• Round 3: Morning of Day 2
• Final Round: After submission and presentation

In each round, judges visit your team’s table, provide feedback, ask tough questions, and assess progress. They evaluate on various parameters like:

✅ Clarity of thought ✅ Innovation and originality ✅ Scalability and real-world impact ✅ Tech stack and architecture ✅ UI/UX and implementation ✅ Team coordination and communication

🏆 7. Final Presentation & Results

After all evaluations and last-minute edits, teams submit their project and give a final presentation.

Then comes the much-awaited moment — the declaration of winners!

Whether you win or not, participating in SIH is a win in itself. The experience, growth, and exposure you get is absolutely unmatched.

👩‍💻 My SIH Journey!

In August 2024, our college, held the internal hackathon round. The challenge? 👉 Choose a problem statement from the SIH portal and present a working idea, including a PowerPoint deck and prototype, to our professors.

📌 More than 200 teams applied. After intense presentations, only 25 teams (20 main + 5 backups) were selected . The ideas were submited by each team on the SIH portal .

⚖️ Our Problem Statement: Legal Tech for India

Our team chose a complex yet exciting challenge under the Ministry of Law and Justice. There were 5 legal tech problem statements; we submitted our idea for one of them through the SIH portal.

🎯 A few weeks later, on November 11, 2024, SIH announced the top 5 teams selected for each problem statement across India. Our team was selected! It was both surreal and thrilling.

Then began the real grind — we had just one month to go,

• Ideate in depth
• Build 50–60% of the project
• Prepare for sudden changes and integrations during the 36-hour finale

✈️ Off to Belagavi, Karnataka — The Grand Finale!

The Ministry of Law and Justice assigned its 5 problem statements to VTU Belagavi. So, 25 finalist teams from across the country came together under one roof.

⏱️ The 36-Hour Marathon Begins: December 11, 2024

The hackathon kicked off at 9 AM, and it was all energy, adrenaline, and logic from there.

🧑‍⚖️ Evaluation Rounds:

• Round 1: Around 12 noon
• Round 2: Around 8 PM
• Round 3: On December 12 at 10 AM
• Final Presentation: From 7 PM onwards

In each round, three judges visited our table and asked deep technical and strategic questions. Their suggestions were critical — we wrote them all down because they really added value.

💡 Pro Tip: Always note judge feedback. It’s gold.

💥 Last-Minute Chaos — and Strategy!

After Round 3, we were hit with a wave of suggestions:

• Revamp a key feature
• Add an entirely new module
• Fix several UI glitches

And the clock was ticking. We had just 3–4 hours left before the final submission at 6 PM.

Instead of panicking, we strategically divided tasks, stayed calm, and focused on completion. In our heads, we felt like we’d lost the chance… but we didn’t give up.

✨ “In those final moments, all that mattered was teamwork and clarity.”

And then — the glitch fixes were done, the project was submitted, and we delivered our final presentation.

🏆 And Then… We Won!

That night, as the results were announced, our team’s name was called. We were shocked, surprised, and yes — we cried happy tears.

📚 What I Learned from SIH 2024

1️⃣ Clarity > Complexity

Your PPT matters. Avoid large blocks of text — use:

• Flowcharts
• Architecture diagrams
• Tech stack visuals
• Clear problem-solution-impact slides.

2️⃣ Resilience is Everything

In those 36 hours, you’ll face many ups and downs. Don’t worry about results — just keep building.

3️⃣ Team > Everything Else

Pick a team where communication flows, decisions are mutual, and every voice matters.

4️⃣ Just Participate

Even if you feel underprepared — just go for it. You’ll be surprised how much you grow.
