Raja Ampat and Nickel: When “Green” Starts to Feel Uncomfortable

I’ve always thought of Raja Ampat as a place that should never have to defend its existence. Crystal-clear waters, endless coral reefs, and marine life that feels almost unreal. It’s the kind of place that reminds us how small we are compared to nature.
But lately, Raja Ampat has been asked to make a choice it shouldn’t have to make.
Nickel — one of the key materials behind electric vehicles and renewable energy — is now shaping the future of global “green” development. To meet this demand, mining permits have been issued on several islands in Raja Ampat. On paper, this sounds like progress. In reality, it feels far more complicated.
Mining activity brings waste. Plastic packaging, fuel containers, construction materials — things that don’t belong in a marine paradise. When heavy rain falls, waste from mining areas can be carried into rivers and pushed straight into the ocean. At docks, debris can enter the water during loading and unloading, quietly becoming part of the sea.
The damage isn’t always dramatic, but it’s real. Sedimentation can slowly suffocate coral reefs by blocking sunlight. Heavy metals from mining waste can contaminate seawater, affecting marine life and the people who depend on it. For communities whose lives revolve around fishing and tourism, these changes are not abstract environmental issues — they’re personal.
Then there’s bilge dumping: the illegal release of oily wastewater from ships. It’s a hidden practice, often invisible to the public, yet deeply harmful. Each incident chips away at Raja Ampat’s reputation as a global conservation icon and raises an uncomfortable question about who truly benefits from “green” development.
