In today’s modern world, advancements in technology have greatly facilitated communication with our families and friends compared to earlier times. From text messages and phone calls to platforms like WhatsApp, staying connected has become more convenient and accessible than ever before.
As Christians, we communicate with God through prayer. But have you ever wondered how God communicates with us? Well, it’s through various means such as visions, revelations, dreams, and prophecy that we receive spiritual guidance from Him.
How do we learn about this? Well, it’s all from the Bible, the word of God. Throughout the Old and New Testaments, we can read about numerous significant figures who received visions, revelations, dreams, and prophecies from God.
What is the purpose? We can find out from the Bible, those signs sent by God to prophets, apostles, preachers, deacons with the purpose of guiding, encouraging, warning and edifying the church.
Ephesians 3:3 How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words, 4 Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ) 5 Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;
These verses refer to the revelation that Paul received from God concerning the mystery of Christ. Paul explains that this mystery was not fully known in previous times but has now been revealed to the apostles and prophets through the Holy Spirit.
Let’s look the book of Proverbs 29:18 (Upper portion) Where there is no vision, the people perish:
In the Old Testament, God often communicated with His people through visions, dreams, prophecies, and even by speaking directly to individuals to guide them and reveal His will. This verse highlights the importance of God’s communication, as without His guidance through visions, His people may perish due to lack of direction.
For example, He spoke to Abraham, Moses, Samuel, Solomon and Daniel.
- Abraham — Genesis 12:1–3 — “Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee: And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing.” To ask Abraham to go to an unknown land and He will pour His blessings to Abraham if he obeys.
- Moses — Exodus 3:2–4 — “And the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed. And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt. And when the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I.” Here, God spoke to Moses from the burning bush to let him know that He is God who is speaking to Him.
- Samuel — 1 Samuel 3:4–10 — Here, God called to Samuel 3 times but he didn’t know and ran to Eli. Eli told Samuel to answer God when he hears him call again. When God called Samuel again, he answered in verse 10 Speak; for thy servant heareth. God reveals to Samuel that He is going to bring judgment upon the house of Eli the priest because of the sins of his sons. Samuel is hesitant to deliver this message to Eli, but Eli encourages him to speak the truth.
- Solomon — 1 Kings 3:5–28 — God speaks to Solomon in a dream. After Solomon offered sacrifices at the high place in Gibeon, the Lord appeared to him in a dream at night. God tells Solomon to ask for whatever he wants, and Solomon requests wisdom to govern the people of Israel. In 1 Kings 3:16–28, there was a case where two women come to Solomon with a dispute over a baby. Solomon, in his wisdom, suggests cutting the baby in half to resolve the conflict. The true mother, out of love for her child, offers to give up the baby to the other woman to save its life. Solomon identifies the real mother based on her selfless act and gives the child to her.
- Daniel — Daniel Chapter 2 — King Nebuchadnezzar has a troubling dream that he demands his wise men, magicians, and astrologers to interpret. When they fail, the king orders the execution of all the wise men in Babylon, including Daniel and his friends. Through prayer, Daniel receives the interpretation of the dream that the king’s own wise men could not provide. God reveals the meaning of the dream to Daniel in verse 19, enabling him to explain the symbolism of the statue and its significance in terms of the future kingdoms. The king promotes Daniel and his friends to high positions in Babylon and they escaped death.
In the New Testament, God has also sent visions to the followings:
- Joseph, husband of Mary — Matthew 1:20–21 — “But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins.” The angel of the Lord appearing to Joseph in a dream, assuring him not to fear taking Mary as his wife because the child she carries is conceived by the Holy Spirit. Here explains that Mary will give birth to a son, and Joseph is instructed to name him Jesus because he will save his people from their sins.
- Peter — Acts 10:9–16 — The meaning of this vision becomes clear when Peter later meets with Cornelius, a Roman centurion, and his household. In this vision, Peter realizes that just as he was initially hesitant to accept the unclean animals in the vision, he should not discriminate against Gentiles but should share the message of salvation with all people.
- Paul — Acts 18:9–10 — “Then spake the Lord to Paul in the night by a vision, Be not afraid, but speak, and hold not thy peace: For I am with thee, and no man shall set on thee to hurt thee: for I have much people in this city.” These verses recounts a moment when the Lord speaks to the apostle Paul in a vision. The Lord reassures Paul not to be afraid and to continue speaking boldly, for no one will harm him in Corinth because God is with him. This message from God to ensure Paul of God’s protection emboldens Paul to continue his ministry and preaching despite facing opposition and challenges.
In the Old Testament, God consistently communicates with His chosen servants such as Abraham, Moses, Samuel, Solomon, and Daniel through visions, dreams, and prophecies to convey His will.
From Abraham’s encounters with God’s promises to Moses’ burning bush revelation and leadership guidance, from Samuel’s prophetic calling to anoint kings to Solomon’s wisdom bestowed in a dream, and from Daniel’s interpretation of dreams to reveal future events. These communications provided clear direction, wisdom, and empowerment for them to carry out God’s will in their respective roles.
In the new testament, Joseph receives prophetic dreams, an angel appears to Joseph, reassuring him to take Mary as his wife because the child she is carrying is conceived by the Holy Spirit. This verse highlights the divine origin and purpose of Jesus’ birth.
Peter experiences a vision of unclean animals and a divine message to accept all people into the Christian community, highlighting God’s inclusive love for all. Paul receives a comforting vision from God, assuring him of protection and encouragement in his mission to spread the gospel.
Now, let’s just imagine, what would happened if all the mentioned here do not believe their visions, dreams, prophecy and revelations sent from God?
Would they be able to carry out the tasks in accordance to God’s will?
Would Bible even exist? Do you think we can receive God’s grace and have an opportunity to attain salvation?
Would you and I even exist and sitting here today?
No, I doubt none of that would happen if they don’t believe.
It’s just the same today. What would happen if you do not believe your visions, dreams, revelations and prophecy God sent to you?
Of course, there are many deacons and believers who deny and reject these signs and messages because they fear that these experiences might be of satan origin and temptations fuelled by lust. Why so?
Let’s refer to the book of James 1:14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. The satan succeeds in tempting us because we have packs of wrong and fleshly desires.
Let us also look into the book of 2 Corinthians 11:1–21.
Some deceitful leaders have misused verse 14 to justify rejecting and denying God’s signs and messages conveyed through visions, revelations, dreams, and prophecies, often due to their hidden agendas. They have misused this Bible verse to deceive the believers who received signs and messages in order to confuse them not to believe what they received from God.
Here, in verses 1–21, it’s been discussed that verse 14 reveals how satan can appear as an angel of light. This signifies that false prophets may masquerade as righteous servants to deceive others into trusting them.
Paul warns the Corinthians believers in these verses about the dangers of false teachers who disguise themselves as servants of righteousness but they are actually the agents of deception and self-promotion.
He contrasts the false teacher’s motives, which are driven by greed, self-interest, and deceit, with Paul’s own sincere and selfless commitment to serving the Lord and the church. Paul teaches us how to discern between the true and false teachers carefully.
Let us read the book of Matthew 7:16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? If the plant does not produce grapes, it is not a grapevine. Or, it is diseased, according to Jesus in the following verse Matthew 7:17 Even so every good tree bringers forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringers forth evil fruit.
Jesus gave us example of false teachers, in the book of Matthew 23:27 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness. 28 Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity
It’s very clear here, we can’t judge a self-proclaimed prophet or teacher by their outward appearance. Appearing smart, authoritative, moral, or “nice” does not mean what they say is true.
In fact, Jesus said in John 7:24 Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgement. When it comes to self-proclaimed teachers or prophets, that means looking at what comes from their teaching and from their lives. Do their actions match their teaching? Do they give care to others when nobody is watching? Are those who follow their teachings people of good reputation? Do they fit with what is known from Bible?
Let’s ask ourselves, what is the purpose of us believing in God? Why Jesus has to come into this world to be sacrificed, suffered and be nailed on the cross? None other than He just want to save our souls and for us to have eternal life.
If such, what makes you think that God allow satan create signs and messages to confuse and lead us astray from God, which eventually tempt us to sin? 1 Corinthians 14:33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.
1 Peter 4:12 Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: God tests us to strengthen our faith, but He never tempts us to sin. From the beginning, His intention has been to save us, and He has already cleansed us of our original sins through His sacrifice on the cross. As the Bible says in, James 1:13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:
Prophet Joel has prophesied in Joel 2:28 “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions.” Prophet Joel is speaking about a future event where God promises to pour out His Spirit upon all flesh. He is prophesying about a time when God will empower people of all backgrounds, ages, and genders with His Spirit, enabling them to receive divine revelations, prophesy, dream dreams, and see visions.
Let’s turn to the book of Acts 2:14–18
14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words: 15 For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day. 16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; 17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: 18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:
Here explains that, Peter is speaking to the crowd on the day of Pentecost, explaining the phenomenon of the disciples speaking in other tongues after receiving the Holy Spirit. He quotes the prophecy from Joel to show the connection between the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on that day and the fulfillment of the prophetic promise made by Joel centuries earlier. By quoting Prophet Joel’s prophecy, Peter is emphasizing that what they are witnessing is a fulfillment of God’s plan and a continuation of His work throughout history.
Does God speak to us? Let’s check in the book of Acts 8:29 Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot. The Spirit of the Lord specifically instructs Philip to approach and join a chariot. This guidance leads Philip to the Ethiopian eunuch who is reading from the book of Isaiah. By following the prompting of the Spirit, Philip is able to engage with the eunuch, explain the Scriptures to him, and he got baptised.
Acts 10:19 While Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said unto him, Behold, three men seek thee.
This verse describes a moment when Peter is pondering a vision he had received from God, and then the Holy Spirit speaks to him, informing him that three men are looking for him. Peter receives a vision that challenges his understanding of the dietary laws and prepares him to share the Gospel with Gentiles. This verse tells us the role of the Holy Spirit in guiding and directing Peter to interact with the three men, who later lead him to the house of Cornelius, a Roman centurion. Only then, he understands his vision.
Acts 13:2 As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.
The Holy Spirit specifically designates Barnabas and Saul (later known as the apostle Paul) for a special mission. The Holy Spirit’s directive to separate Barnabas and Saul sets in motion a series of events that lead to their missionary journeys and the spread of the Gospel to different regions.
Acts 16:6 Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia,7 After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not.
These verses describe Paul’s missionary journey and the guidance of the Holy Spirit in directing his movements. The Holy Spirit prevented Paul and his companions from preaching in certain regions, such as Asia and Bithynia, indicating that it was not yet the right time or place for their ministry. Even though Paul had plans and intentions for his missionary work, he submitted to the Spirit’s direction and followed where he was led by God.
Let’s turn to the book of Habakkuk 2:2 And the LORD answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it. God has instructed Habakkuk to write down his vision for others to learn. We are to share visions, dreams, revelations and prophecy we received.
Let’s turn to the book of Job 33:14–18 says: “For God speaketh once, yea twice, yet man perceiveth it not. In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed; Then he openeth the ears of men, and sealeth their instruction, that he may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man. He keepeth back his soul from the pit, and his life from perishing by the sword.” Job emphasizes here on how God communicates with us through dreams and visions. God uses dreams and visions to guide and instruct His people, steering them away from destructive paths and protecting them from harm.
Lastly, 1 Corinthians 14:1 “Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.” This verse encourages believers to seek spiritual gifts, including the gift of prophecy, which can involve receiving visions and revelations from God. This verse underscore the value and significance of visions, dreams, and revelations as ways in which God communicates with His people and guides them in their faith and lives.
Brothers and Sisters, let us all have pure faith and trust in God so that satan will flee from us.
All Glory and Praises unto our Lord Jesus Christ. 🙏🏻🩷
