The Idiots of Certainty

Bismarck supposedly divided the peoples of the world into three kinds. The wise who learn from others, the mediocre who learn from themselves, and the idiots who never learn. If he truly said that, he must have foreseen the future, because here we are, celebrating idiocy as moral courage. We worship our own ignorance as if it were revelation. We no longer read to understand, only to confirm. We no longer argue to build, only to wound.

The age of extremism is not an era of conviction but of exhaustion. People cling to their beliefs the way drowning men cling to stones. The heavier the ideology, the faster they sink. Every side calls itself enlightened, yet all walk in circles around the same fire, feeding it with their fear of being wrong. They wear outrage like perfume and spread it in clouds over the ruins of conversation.
No one listens anymore. They perform listening while waiting to speak. They rehearse compassion in the mirror and call it empathy. They claim moral superiority while scrolling through headlines like a gambler through slot machines. Each click another sermon, another rush of certainty, another illusion of control.
If Bismarck was right, then wisdom has gone extinct, mediocrity has been promoted, and idiocy has been crowned. The wise are exhausted, the mediocre are trending, and the idiots are publishing manifestos. We no longer build nations of iron and blood, only tribes of pixels and outrage. The battlefield has moved inside the comment section, and the flag is a hashtag.
Extremism is no longer about ideology. It is about appetite. People are hungry for meaning, but meaning demands patience, and patience is no longer profitable. So they binge on anger instead. It is fast, cheap, and endlessly renewable. Each outrage promises transcendence and delivers fatigue. Each victory tastes like ash.
And yet they keep marching, convinced that louder means stronger, that crueler means truer, that absolute conviction is a virtue rather than a symptom. They look for enemies to feel innocent, for martyrs to feel alive, for saviors to avoid thinking.
If there is a hierarchy of learning, we have inverted it beautifully. The wise whisper, the mediocre debate, the idiots broadcast. We built machines to think for us, and now we imitate them. Algorithms have replaced prophets, and metrics have replaced meaning.
Bismarck built empires out of discipline. We build chaos out of comfort. He ruled men who feared silence. We fear boredom. And so, in our infinite cleverness, we have managed to turn stupidity into a lifestyle.
The future will not belong to the wise or the strong, but to the loudest. And when the last idiot declares victory, it will be over a kingdom of echoes.
