The men roll their eyes, “Women,” they say to each other.
I am sure we have seen this on TV or in real life — or both.
It’s one of the timeless gestures used to reinforce that women are complicated.
Thousands of books and hundreds of movies later, the stereotype refuses to die. Humans plan to build a colony on Mars, but women are still complicated and hard to understand.
Are women really complicated?
Are Men Too Simple?
What does science say — Do women’s hormones make them complicated?
We will try to answer these questions and more in this story.
Are Men Too Simple?
If women are complicated, that implies men are too simple.
Sex, food, money, video games, alcohol, and sports — this is men in a nutshell.
As long as men have access to these, they are the happiest creatures on this planet. Emotions are an alien concept to men — they are tough, in charge of situations, mentally strong, and self-reliant.
Such gender stereotyping is harmful and promotes a culture where it is taboo for men to seek help for mental issues. Men who do not conform to their stereotypes also face more discrimination.
If men were that simple, 1 in 8 men would not suffer from depression at some point in their lives.
If you believe men are simple, take a look at this statistic:
*Globally, the suicide rate for men is twice as high as for women.*
And ever wondered why so many male crossdressers and males that identify themselves as females are increasing in number?
Certainly not because men are too simple.
( We will touch more on this topic in the last point.)
Women Are More Emotional Than Men
One of the primary arguments by people who claim women are too complicated.
However, a recent scientific study revealed men are just as emotional as women.
Little evidence for sex or ovarian hormone influences on affective variability
The report concludes daily emotion fluctuates to similar extents in men and women. Sex might play a role in the factors that influence emotion but has no impact on affective variability - (the positive and negative emotional experiences that vary and fluctuate over a period).
Furthermore, the study says people are biased when interpreting emotion in men and women.
In a press release by the study’s senior author Adriene Beltz, it said:
For instance, a man whose emotions fluctuate during a sporting event is described as “passionate.” But a woman whose emotions change due to any event, even if provoked, is considered “irrational.”
So, why are women considered more emotional anyway?
The most logical explanation is both sexes try to conform to their gender stereotypes. Women(the emotional beings) express their emotions openly, whereas males(the non-emotional beings) tend to bottle them up — so it seems that women are more emotional than men.
E.g., women can cry in public, and it would be a usual sight. However, if you replace the woman with a man, the sight would seem odd because men supposedly don’t cry(definitely not in public).
Men don’t display their emotions as much as women do, and when they do, onlookers associate it with a fitting sentiment. But when women display emotion, as the study suggests, they are dubbed irrational (read complicated).
Women Do Not Know What They Want In Bed
I have no shame in admitting that sex is relatively straightforward for men — same ol’ thrusting: in-out-in-out — till it is over.
It’s not the same with women. Their bodies are different, and men have to be particularly sensitive to their needs when making love.
Often men are too consumed in their own gratification — they do not think about the women. In their opinion, they have a great sex life with their partner.
But when women complain of being unsatisfied — the men accuse them of not knowing what they want in bed and react by calling them complicated.
Some women may not know what they want in bed — nothing wrong with that. How will they, until they have tried different positions, different thrusting styles, foreplay, oral sex, etc., during sex with their man. The men have to understand this and lead the way because I know that women in many cultures are just too shy to even say they are unsatisfied.
Sex is like a restaurant menu — you have to try the various dishes to know which one is your favorite.
And not all women don’t know what they want in bed.
Women Do The Opposite of What They Say
A very interesting allegation to support the women are complicated theory. And I will not deny there is no truth to it: I have witnessed this myself.
I will give you an example.
There was a guy in college. Good-looking, charming, always surrounded by girls.
I noticed one of my female friends was always rather cold to him. When I asked why she said she detests him.
Fair enough, I thought.
But a few weeks later, I found out they were fucking each other.
Interesting, right?
Fear of being judged and stigmatized plays too much on the mind of women — to get out of a situation, they will sometimes say or do something they might contradict later.
This is not the case with all women, but some women keep their true feelings to themselves. In some cultures, this is the norm.
Some men encounter one such woman in their life and make a sweeping generalization. They tag the entire female gender as confused and therefore complicated.
Women’s Hormones Make Them Complicated
Men and women have the same hormones. Read here.
There is not a single hormone women have that men also do not have — and vice-versa.
The primary female hormones oestrogen (estrogen) and progesterone are also present in small quantities in men. Likewise, the male hormone testosterone is also present in small amounts in women.
The effects of these female hormones are understudied and ignored in men.
Men have their own menopause called andropause. Some of the common symptoms of andropause are Mood swings, Depression, Insomnia, Erectile Dysfunction, etc. All men know about menstrual cycles and menopause in women, but ask them about andropause, and most will scratch their heads.
Men do not understand these things about themselves and fall prey to their gender stereotype of being simple creatures while women become complicated.
The truth is men are as complex organisms as women. They undermine their own complexity by calling women complicated. Men, too, have a plethora of emotions (influenced by their hormones) running around wild in their minds. These emotions manifest themselves in various ways(as discussed in point one).
Conclusion
Neither are women complicated nor are men simple, let alone too simple. Both are affected by hormones, and both are equally emotional. Sex might be a little straightforward for men and complex for women, but that is a relationship and cultural issue between two individuals of opposite sexes — one cannot use it to make a sweeping generalization about women.
Fear of being judged and stigmatized might elicit a spontaneous answer from women, which they might contradict later.
Finally, men and women are not very different. Both want the same things: respect, equality, money, a good partner — in short — a good life.
