Almost Different

I stood at the edge of becoming, one step away from something new, close enough to taste the freedom, far enough to still fall through.
I changed my words, my ways, my silence, learned how to smile at the right time, wore confidence like borrowed clothing, pretended healing looked like shine.
To them, I looked like I was better, like I had finally found my way, but mirrors know the honest version — how some old shadows choose to stay.
I was almost different, almost someone I could trust, almost free from all the pieces of who I was and what it was.
I still flinch at certain memories, still build walls before hello, still confuse love with leaving, still fear what I don’t know.
Growth, I learned, is rarely sudden, it does not bloom in perfect light, sometimes it looks like quiet trying, like choosing softness over fight.
Maybe almost is not failure, maybe it’s proof I chose to start, proof that even broken patterns can be unlearned by patient hearts.
So I stay here — in the in-between, not who I was, not fully new, but if healing is a slow becoming, then almost different will do.
