From Zero to AWS Hero: My Cloud Computing Journey

They say the best journeys are the ones that challenge you, and my adventure into the world of cloud computing is a testament to that. Here’s the story of how I went from a complete beginner to an AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate, all thanks to an incredible scholarship offered by the ALX Academy and Mastercard Foundation and a relentless drive to “Do Hard Things.”

May 2023: I was fortunate enough to be selected for a full-ride scholarship to ALX Academy’s Cloud Computing course, sponsored by the Mastercard Foundation. This was a life-changing opportunity, and I knew it wouldn’t be easy. The Karibu Welcome Ceremony in May set the tone perfectly — “Do Hard Things.” It was a call to action that resonated deeply within me. ALX imbibes the CHAIR values, which are Courage, Humility, Adventure, Initiative, and Resilience, in its learners. I would happily say that this journey is the culmination of all 5 values, with Resilience being most profound.

The Climb Begins: The following months were a whirlwind of intensive training. From the fundamentals of cloud computing to the intricacies of specific platforms, I dove headfirst into this new and exciting world. The learning curve was steep, but the supportive environment at ALX, coupled with my own determination, kept me pushing forward.

First Step on the Cloud: Fast forward to October 2023. The culmination of those dedicated months arrived: the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner exam. While the concepts may have seemed daunting at first, the comprehensive training and my own commitment to understanding the basics had paid off. Earning my first AWS certification was a moment of immense satisfaction. It was a small but significant victory, a concrete marker of progress on my cloud computing journey.

This is Just the Beginning: While the Cloud Practitioner certification is a great first step, it’s merely the beginning of my cloud adventure. The knowledge and skills I’ve gained have ignited a passion for exploring the vast potential of cloud technologies. My story serves as a beacon of hope, especially for those who might feel overwhelmed by the technical world. With dedication, the right support system, and a willingness to “Do Hard Things,” anyone can embark on their own successful cloud journey.

Setting My Sights Higher: Earning my Cloud Practitioner certification was a major confidence boost, but I knew this was just the first step. My sights were set on the AWS Solutions Architect Associate (SAA) certification, a more comprehensive validation of my cloud expertise. The SAA curriculum delved deeper into practical application, something I craved.

Underestimating the Challenge: Fueled by my initial success, I naively approached the SAA with a “quick shop” mentality. Past questions, video lessons, and a sprinkle of practice on the AWS Free Tier seemed sufficient. The Christmas season added another layer of distraction. Let’s just say, come exam day in February 2024, reality hit hard. A score of 646 fell far short of the passing mark.

First Attempt, February 2024

Failure as a Stepping Stone: Disappointment? Absolutely. But more importantly, it was a wake-up call. “I didn’t deserve to pass,” I admitted to myself. The lack of proper practice was glaring. This wasn’t a test to be outsmarted with shortcuts; it demanded dedication and a solid foundation.

Round Two: A Different Approach: Determined to conquer the SAA, I rescheduled my exam for late March. ALX offered a support program, but after two sessions, I realized their rehearsal style didn’t suit me. My strength was methodical problem-solving, not rushing through questions. I charted my own course, focusing on building a personal approach that emphasized accuracy over speed.

Second Attempt, Second Chance: The second attempt in March was a different story. Confidence, yes, but tempered with a healthy dose of respect for the exam’s rigor. This time, I emerged victorious with a score of 710, just a stone’s throw from the coveted pass mark.

So Close, Yet So Far: 710! The sting of missing the passing mark by a hair was undeniable. Why? How? These questions echoed in my head. But amidst the disappointment, a crucial realization dawned on me. My brother’s words echoed in my mind:

• “You’re good enough. You know this. Just get this past the finish line.”
• “Take it that you’re reading this course three times, which means you should know all concepts thrice as good.”
• “Schedule your next exam immediately!”

Taking Charge: His advice resonated deeply. I knew I possessed the capability, and three times through the course material meant a deeper understanding. Wasting no time, I secured funding and scheduled my next attempt for April. This time, it was do-or-die.

A New Approach: My study strategy underwent a complete overhaul. Quantity wasn’t enough; quality was paramount. My goal was 1000 practice questions, focusing not just on answering correctly but also understanding the “why” behind each answer. Stephen Maarek’s Udemy course became my study bible, his clear explanations were a guiding light. I shed any lingering misconceptions and embraced a rigorous study pace.

Third Time’s the Charm (Almost): Three weeks of intense preparation yielded roughly 500 completed practice questions. Confidence wavered, replaced by a healthy dose of nervous energy. A silent prayer escaped my lips: “Lord, three times is the charm, let me ace this.”

This third attempt proved to be the most challenging. Unlike previous results delivered within hours, the wait for this score announcement was agonizing. Tension became my constant companion, pushing thoughts of socializing with friends far from my mind. I craved distractions, comfort, anything to break free from the anxious hold.

A Score to Remember: Fasten your seatbelts! My third attempt in April 2024 yielded a score of 796! A massive leap from my second attempt, a testament to the power of focused studying, unwavering determination, and God’s grace.

The Journey Continues: My journey to cloud mastery is far from over. The SAA certification is a significant milestone, but it’s just the beginning. This experience is a testament to the power of perseverance and a reminder that even setbacks can be valuable learning opportunities.

My journey has been a rollercoaster of emotions, but ultimately, a resounding success. It’s a story of perseverance, adaptation, resilience, and the importance of learning from setbacks.

This is the message I share with anyone considering a foray into the cloud: with dedication, the right approach, and a willingness to learn from mistakes, anyone can achieve their cloud computing goals.

I must encourage you, your efforts in any examination are still valid. Be the go-getter you are. The journey might be the toughest bit, but the reward would be the sweetest part.

Above all, God remains the greatest as HE alone led me through this journey.
