When the Compass Breaks
A journey through spiritual disorientation, emotional exhaustion, and the slow return to true north.

When the Compass Breaks
Have you ever felt like your life once had a compass, but somewhere along the way the needle stopped pointing north? Have you ever felt like you are standing in the middle of your own story, watching the arrow spin and spin, never settling, never guiding, never giving you the clarity you are begging for?
Because lately, that is where I have been living, in the quiet chaos of a compass with no direction.
Someone close to me recently stepped into a moment that felt big, a moment that looked like destiny unfolding right in front of them. And while I celebrated them, something inside me trembled. Not out of envy, not out of bitterness, but out of the ache of a woman who has been wandering for so long she has forgotten what it feels like to move with certainty.
And I wonder, have you ever felt that? That strange, uncomfortable ache of clapping for someone else while your own soul whispers, God, where am I even going?
It is not that I do not have dreams. It is not that I do not have faith. It is not that I do not believe God has a plan for me. It is that my compass feels broken.
The needle does not settle. The direction does not reveal itself. The pull toward purpose feels faint, like a whisper I cannot quite hear.
Have you ever felt like that? Like you are trying to follow God, but the path feels foggy? Like you are trying to build something, but everything slips through your fingers? Like you are trying to heal, but the past keeps tugging at your ankles?
Because I have.
I have been fighting my mind. I have been wrestling with my body. I have been carrying responsibilities that do not come with applause. I have been trying to build a future while feeling stuck in the present. I have been praying prayers that feel like they are floating in the air with no place to land.
And the truth is, sometimes someone else’s breakthrough exposes the places where we feel lost. Sometimes their elevation highlights the areas where our compass has stopped working. Sometimes their moment forces us to admit that we are wandering, not aimlessly, but painfully.
But a spinning compass does not mean you are failing. A spinning compass does not mean God has abandoned you. A spinning compass does not mean you are going the wrong way. Sometimes it means you are in a place where God is recalibrating you.
In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths. Proverbs 3:6
But direction does not always come instantly. Sometimes it comes slowly, quietly, painfully, like a needle trying to find true north again after being shaken.
And I have been shaken. By life. By disappointment. By exhaustion. By dreams that have not bloomed yet. By the weight of being everything for everyone else. By the fear that maybe I missed my moment.
Have you ever felt that fear? That whisper that says, What if I never become who I thought I would be?
But then I think about the compass again. A compass only spins when something is interfering with its pull. Something magnetic. Something distracting. Something powerful enough to confuse its direction.
And isn’t that life?
Distractions. Compromises. Old wounds. Worldly pressures. Regret. Fear. Comparison. Self-doubt.
All of them tugging at the needle. All of them pulling me off center. All of them making it harder to hear God’s voice.
But on the other side, the side I am still learning to choose, there is purpose. Obedience. Restoration. Eternity. Identity. Truth. Wisdom. Faith.
And maybe the reason my compass feels broken is because God is teaching me to stop relying on the needle and start relying on Him.
Maybe the spinning is not a sign of failure but a sign of transition. Maybe the disorientation is not punishment but preparation. Maybe the silence is not abandonment but alignment.
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Psalm 119:105
Not a map. Not a spotlight. Not a full blueprint. A lamp. Just enough light for the next step.
So if you have ever felt like your compass has no pull, if you have ever felt like the arrow just keeps spinning, if you have ever felt torn between distraction and destiny, you are not alone.
You are not behind. You are not forgotten. You are not failing.
You are becoming.
And maybe your compass is not broken. Maybe it is being reset. Maybe God is clearing the interference. Maybe He is pulling you back to true north, slowly, gently, faithfully.
Because God does not rush direction. He reveals it. One step at a time.
Even if your compass is spinning right now, you are still held. You are still guided. You are still on holy ground.
