I Finally Won My Sunday Nap… And Lost My Night

I thought I’d outsmarted my family. Sleep had other ideas.

Last Sunday, my family interrupted my much-awaited Sunday nap.

This Sunday, I decided to be smarter. So, I didn’t cook lunch. I simply ordered food from outside.

Then I told my kids, “I’ve ordered lunch, so you’re all set. Watch a movie and let Mumma sleep for a while, okay?”

For their safety, I locked the main gate and the terrace gate so they couldn’t wander outside. Then I locked my bedroom door, went straight to bed, and fell asleep at 1:30 p.m.

When I opened my eyes, it was already 5:00 p.m.

I did it.

No one had knocked on my door. No one had been called “Mumma”. No one had asked for the TV remote. I felt so fresh and happy that I actually thought, Finally, I’ve found the secret to a perfect Sunday nap.

Little did I know, sleep had its own plans for me that night. My husband had worked on Sunday, too, so he went to bed early. I finished a few pending chores and finally joined him around 11:00 p.m.

But sleep never came.

At 11:30, I gently woke my husband. “Dear, I can’t sleep.”

Still half asleep, he replied, “Just close your eyes and lie down. Sleep will come automatically.”

“Okay,” I said.

I closed my eyes. Within minutes, my brain started writing my next Medium story. Then I began thinking about an upcoming wedding—what I would wear, which song I should dance to, and a hundred other completely unnecessary things.

Everything came. Except for sleep.

By 12:30, I woke him again. “Dear... closing my eyes isn’t working.”

He sighed and said, “Listen to some calming music. But please... I’m really tired. Don’t wake me up again.”

I agreed.

Then I realized I couldn’t find my headphones.

So... “Dear... just one last time. Where are my headphones?”

Without saying a word, he handed them to me. He had them because he usually falls asleep while listening to music.

I tried lo-fi music.

Sad songs.

Calm Bollywood melodies.

Even nature sounds.

Apparently, their sound waves and my sleep waves were on completely different frequencies.

Nothing worked. Then, as if insomnia wasn’t enough, I suddenly felt hungry. It was 1:30 in the morning. I quietly sneaked into the kitchen like a thief, grabbed something to eat, and tiptoed back to bed.

At some point, I finally fell asleep. Unfortunately, my dreams had other plans.

Two scary men were chasing me. They wanted to kill me, and I was running for my life.

I woke up terrified. And yes... I woke my husband again. “Dear! Someone is trying to kill me in my dream!”

Without even opening his eyes, he mumbled, “If you wake me up one more time... I might just lose my mind.”

I knew he was joking, but for a second, I didn’t know whom I should be more afraid of. The men in my dream... Or my husband.

So I picked up my blanket, grabbed my pillow, quietly escaped to my kids' room, and finally fell asleep. I don’t know when.

The next morning, I felt more tired than I had before my relaxing Sunday. My husband looked at me, smiled, and said, “Dear, if you want to relax, please go to a spa… or a restaurant. Just don’t take another Sunday nap.”

He thinks the nap is the problem. I think I just need a better plan.

So here I am, surviving on tea for the rest of the week and already looking forward to next Sunday.

P.S. If you’re wondering why I was so determined to protect my Sunday nap, you can read the story that started it all: The Sunday My Family Stole My Nap.
