NEPSE New Circuit Rules Alert 15% from 20th April 2026

If you’ve been trading on the Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) lately, chances are you’ve experienced this emotional rollercoaster:

📈 Market opens 📈 Boom! Index jumps 🛑 Circuit breaker hits 😐 Market closes before your tea gets cold

Well, good news — NEPSE has finally decided to calm down a little.

On April 8, NEPSE announced revised circuit breaker rules after receiving the green light from the Securities Board of Nepal (SEBON). The goal? Fewer panic stops, smoother trading, and fewer investors yelling at their screens.

And honestly… it was about time.

First Things First: What Is a Circuit Breaker?

No, it’s not an electrical fuse that keeps blowing.

In stock market language, a circuit breaker is a safety switch. When prices swing too wildly — up or down — trading is temporarily halted so everyone can chill, rethink, and maybe stop making emotional decisions based on one green candle.

NEPSE uses two types:

  • Index-based circuit breakers (for the overall market)
  • Stock-specific circuit breakers (for individual companies)

So… What Changed?

Only Two Circuit Breakers a Day

Earlier, NEPSE looked like it would shut down if the index sneezed too hard. Now:

  • If the index moves 5% up or down within the first hour, trading halts for 15 minutes
  • After resuming, if the index moves another 8%, trading shuts down for the rest of the day

That’s it. Two chances. No overreaction.

Previously?

  • 4% = 20-minute halt
  • 5% = 40-minute halt
  • 6% = Game over for the day

No wonder traders felt like they were stuck in a stop-start traffic jam.

Stocks Can Stretch Their Legs More

Individual shares now have more freedom to move:

📊 Old limit: ±10% 📊 New limit: ±15%

That’s a big deal, especially for active traders. Less artificial capping means prices can reflect real demand and supply — not just hit the ceiling and sit there awkwardly.

Pre-Open Session Got a Small Upgrade Too

During the pre-opening session:

  • Old fluctuation limit: 2%
  • New limit: 3%

A small change, yes — but just enough to reduce strange price gaps when the market opens.

The March 5 Meltdown (Why This Was Inevitable)

Let’s talk about that day.

On the first trading day after the March 5 elections, NEPSE managed to trigger three consecutive circuit breakers and shut the market within one hour.

One hour.

That was the final straw for investors, who were already complaining that the rules were too rigid and out of touch with how markets actually work.

This revision is NEPSE’s polite way of saying, “Okay… maybe we overdid it.”

After-Market Orders: Night Owls Rejoice 🦉

Now for one of the coolest updates — especially for Nepalis living abroad.

📅 New after-market order timing: 🕕 6 PM to 6 AM

That means:

  • NRNs can finally place orders without setting alarms at odd hours
  • Traders can plan calmly instead of rushing during market hours

NEPSE spokesperson Murahari Parajuli said this move aims to make trading easier for investors outside Nepal. Translation: “We heard you.”

Déjà Vu? Yes, This Has Happened Before

Interestingly, this isn’t NEPSE’s first attempt at being flexible. Similar relaxed rules were introduced back in April 2019 — proof that markets evolve, and regulations sometimes need reminders.

Final Thoughts: A Step in the Right Direction

Are the new rules perfect? Maybe not. Are they better? Absolutely.

✔ Fewer unnecessary halts ✔ More realistic price movement ✔ Better access for global investors ✔ Less drama, more trading

NEPSE hasn’t turned into Wall Street overnight — but at least now it won’t shut down before lunch.

What do you think? Will this bring more confidence to the market, or are we just fixing one problem at a time?

Either way, one thing’s clear: the circuit breakers finally learned how to relax. 😄📉📈
