The day a woman resigns is usually not the day she decided to leave.

One thing I’ve been reflecting on lately:

Most talented women don’t wake up one morning and suddenly decide to quit.

The resignation letter is often the final chapter to a story that started much earlier.

Sometimes it starts when opportunities quietly stop coming.

Sometimes when visibility becomes selective.

Sometimes when feedback becomes inconsistent.

Sometimes when the same behaviour is interpreted differently depending on who displays it.

Sometimes when leaves need explaining more than performance does.

And mostly, when the emotional energy required to navigate the environment becomes greater than the energy required to do the actual job.

None of these moments seem significant in isolation, which is why they’re so difficult to talk about.

Each one can be-

explained away,

dismissed,

called a misunderstanding.

But accumulation has a cost.

And over time, people stop asking:

“How do I grow here?”

and start asking:

“Why am I fighting so hard just to be seen accurately?”

The irony is that many organisations don’t lose women because of compensation.

They lose them because of erosion.

Of confidence.

Of trust.

Of belonging.

Of belief that effort and opportunity are connected.

The day a woman resigns is often not the day she decided to leave.

It’s simply the day she finally stopped convincing herself to stay.

It wasn’t that I didn’t have the fight left in me.

It wasn’t that I didn’t have facts in my favour.

It wasn’t even that I believed I was wrong.

It’s that eventually, I found myself asking a different question:

“Even if I win this, is it worth winning?”
