Testimony from a College Student Who Commutes by Subway

I use the subway every day to get to college, and honestly, I don’t think that whole sound story is completely made up.

The first time I noticed it was close to the last train of the night. You know how stations get when there’s barely anyone around and the whole platform feels strangely quiet? In that atmosphere, there was this low sound coming from somewhere, constantly humming in the background.

At first I figured it was just ventilation or machinery. Subways are always full of mechanical noise anyway. But this didn’t feel like ordinary ambient sound. It had something like a rhythm to it. Not perfectly steady — more like a broken, uneven repetition. And the low end sounded strangely distorted.

Every now and then, there’d also be this noise layered underneath it. Like hearing a guitar from really far away, chopped up and echoing through the station.

At the time I thought maybe I was imagining it. But later, while browsing online, I found posts from people saying they’d heard “something that sounded like Kanashibari” in the subway too. That’s when I thought, “Okay, so I’m not the only one hearing this.”

It’s not like an actual song is playing or anything. There’s no clear melody. It’s more the texture of the sound that feels similar. Like fragments of a live recording being looped somewhere out of sight.

And it doesn’t sound like it’s coming from the station speakers either. It feels mixed into the echoes of the walls or the deeper parts of the passageways. Sometimes you hear it clearly, then you move a few steps and it disappears completely.

I even tried recording it on my phone once. But when I played it back, it just sounded like normal subway ambience. I remember thinking, “No, I swear it was there…”

What’s weird is that I’ve heard something similar at other stations too. I think they were on the same line. It seems to happen more often late at night.

Apparently the subway operator says no such audio is being played, and that inspections found nothing unusual. I mean, I guess that’s exactly what they’d say.

And honestly, if you asked me, “Was it really Kanashibari?” I couldn’t say for sure. But the way the low frequencies felt, and the way those irregular rhythms blended together — it had the same atmosphere as something I’ve heard before.

So even now, when I’m standing on a platform near the last train, I sometimes catch myself listening carefully.

Just wondering if it’s there again.
