A Throwback to Creating Awareness about Oppia.

On Saturday, the 20th May 2023, Our Dream Initiative (Now Busayo Ademuyiwa Foundation) organized the second edition of their Annual Quiz and Debate Competition. This time, the competition was done among students who live in Makoko and environ. Some adult members in the community, teachers and learners were in attendance. The competition aims to foster healthy competition among community members, promote critical thinking and improve public speaking abilities while offering the participants and attendees an engaging educational experience.

The event started with the host welcoming everyone and telling us what to expect. There were also two judges who graded the students based on their perfomance. The competition kicked off with students doing justice to the topic of the day, which was — Investing in Education: Investing in the Future. This topic was selected to reinforce the value of education. To help the members of the community see how important education is. The quiz and debate segment had four participants each. They were divided into two teams, with each team consisting of two participants. Fun activities were also introduced in between the quiz and debate.

There were over seventy (70) community members in attendance. Fifty-one (51) of them were students between the ages of 7–15. While the rest were parents and teachers who either came to support their children and pupils or came as invited guests. Feedback was given to the participants based on their performance. They were also presented certificates of participation and rewarded with gifts for their good efforts.

After the quiz segment which happened after the debate, I was called upon to introduce Oppia to the audience. Every single person was hearing about Oppia for the first time. I took time to ask those with a smartphone to visit Oppia.org, some did immediately while some students noted down the website so they can visit when they return home. I spelt Oppia to be sure there will be no mistake and asked the audience to repeat after me. After the event I met with some parents and teachers who shared their contacts with me, to let them know more about how they can start using Oppia to improve the learning experience of the children and pupils.
