UX Was Never Just About Screens

On LinkedIn, I see so many posts that reduce UX down to screens, interfaces, wireframes, apps, and software.

And honestly? It makes me a little sad. Not because those things aren’t important. They absolutely are. But because somewhere along the way, we’ve started treating UX as though it only exists inside digital products.

When did that happen?

The definition shared for years by Don Norman and Jakob Nielsen was never limited to apps, websites, or interfaces. UX was intended to describe the entire experience someone has with a product, service, or organisation.

The trust, friction, communication, accessibility, support. All the emotions people feel along the way.

All of it.

Yet somewhere on the journey, our industry started shrinking UX into deliverables.

Now it’s common to see UX described as wireframes, user flows, prototypes, and polished screens.

Those things can absolutely be part of UX.

But they aren’t UX itself.

A patient navigating a hospital.

A passenger finding the right platform at a train station.

A customer trying to understand a pension statement.

A traveller checking into a hotel.

A parent completing a school application.

These are all user experiences. None of them require an app. None of them require a screen. And all of them can be designed well or designed badly.

Digital interfaces are often just one touchpoint within a much larger ecosystem of interactions, processes, policies, communications, and services.

If we continue teaching UX as though it only exists in digital products, we risk losing the very thing that made the discipline important in the first place.

Understanding people, context, needs.

Understanding the experience as a whole.

Because users don’t experience organisations through wireframes. They experience them through moments. And those moments don’t stop at the edge of a screen.

Let’s get UX back to where it was always intended to be.

Beyond the screens. 💪
