I Remember My Granny’s Bread’n’Butter Pudding

And other desserts too

August 8: Robin MS asks, “What did your mother cook better than anyone else? Can you cook it too?”

I can’t remember anything my mother cooked but I wasn’t a skinny child so she must have cooked something in my first 6 years of life. My stepmother was a basic cook and I only remember the food we couldn’t eat. Garfish cakes — yuk!, Chinese sweet’n’sour pork, stewed apples that were invaded by ants (I ate all of that), and oh, she could make the most delicious home made ice-cream except the time she added salt instead of sugar.

My grandmother however was the queen of desserts. Baked rice pudding, tapioca or sago pudding, blanc mange, and best of all, her bread’n’butter pudding. My sister uses Granny’s recipe for bread’n’butter pud and it’s bloody delicious. She’s the culinary genius in the family as a home economics teacher. She sewed a lot of my kids’ clothes and made all of their birthday cakes. I learned to speak French… lol

I can’t sew or cook, but I’m the family crossword champion. Everyone’s good at something, aren’t they?

I wouldn’t know how to make any of these desserts but I sure know how to eat them. My favourite desserts now are Crème Brûlée, Crème Caramel and Panna Cotta — a far cry from my Granny’s bread’n’butter pudding.
