Naija Weather Bros: How We Taught an AI to Speak Pidgin and Talk About the Weather
“For Lagos today, e go hot small oo — better carry water 💧. Rain fit fall later sha, no forget umbrella ☔.”
That’s not your typical AI assistant. That’s Naija Weather Bros — our friendly AI weather buddy that gists like a true Nigerian.
💡 The Idea
It started with a simple frustration — weather apps that don’t “get” us. They tell you “32°C, clear skies”, but we wanted something that feels Nigerian.
Something that sounds like:
“Na 32°C today for Abuja. Sun don dey shine well well, abeg no wear black oo.”
So we thought — what if we could build a small AI that actually talks like that? One that understands Nigeria’s weather, our humor, our slang, and even our chaos.
That’s where Mastra came in.
⚙️ Discovering Mastra
Mastra is like the backstage manager for AI agents. It lets you create agents (little AIs with personalities), connect them to tools (for fetching data), and arrange them in workflows (so they know what to do next).
When we found it, it just clicked. We didn’t want to reinvent the wheel — we just wanted an AI that fetches weather, interprets it, and speaks Naija pidgin.
🧠 Building Naija Weather Bros
We built our main character — Naija Weather Bros, using Mastra’s framework.
We gave him a brain (the AI model), a style (Naija English and Pidgin), and tools (to get real-time weather).
In his “instructions”, we literally told him:
“You be Naija Weather Pal — talk like a friendly guy from Nigeria. Mix English and Pidgin, and give smart weather advice wey go make sense.”
And believe me, he understood the assignment 😎.
🌍 Connecting to Real Weather
Next, we added a weather tool. When someone says “What’s the weather in Abuja?”, the tool goes online, fetches real data — temperature, humidity, wind — and brings it back.
Then our AI interprets it in his own Naija way:
“For Abuja today, weather dey cool small, breeze dey blow. Good day for waka, just no trust the cloud sha 😅.”
Simple, funny, and real.
🔄 The Workflow
The workflow is the secret sauce. It first fetches the weather, then asks the AI to “plan activities” based on it.
If it’s hot — go swimming. If it’s rainy — stay indoors, drink garri, and relax. If it’s cloudy — good time to waka small or gist with friends.
Mastra helped us connect these steps like LEGO blocks — each part doing its job without stress.
🧩 Challenges We Faced
Nothing sweet come easy, abi?
We ran into:
- Streaming AI responses that arrived one line at a time 🌀
- Debugging Nigerian city names that didn’t exist in APIs
- Making the tone sound authentic but still AI-safe
- Ensuring “Mastra no vex” when we deployed 😅
But once it clicked, it was magic. Watching the AI reply in Pidgin for the first time was… surreal.
🧘🏾 Lessons from the Journey
- Start small. Don’t try to build ChatGPT overnight.
- Give your AI personality. That’s what makes people love it.
- Test with friends. Nigerians will always find the funniest edge cases.
- Mastra’s workflows make complex AI systems easy to reason about.
🚀 What’s Next
We’re expanding Naija Weather Bros to do more:
- Travel advice for Nigerian roads 🚗
- Street-level weather updates 🌧️
- Integration with Telegram and WhatsApp 💬
Imagine your AI buddy reminding you:
“Rain go show face soon for Ikeja oo. Better carry umbrella as you dey comot😂.”
That’s the dream — an AI that’s smart, cultural, and fun.
❤️ Final Thoughts
We didn’t just build a weather bot. We built a digital brother that talks like us, understands us, and helps us in our everyday hustle.
And we couldn’t have done it without Mastra, the silent engine that made it all work smoothly.
So next time your app says “32°C, 70% humidity”, just remember — somewhere, Naija Weather Bros is saying:
“My guy, sun don show face oo! Carry shades, carry smile 😎☀️.”
