A DAY WHEN EVERYTHING WENT WRONG

The alarm screamed, and I slammed it off, sinking back into deep sleep. When my eyes finally snapped open, panic hit me like a storm — I was already forty-five minutes late to submit my most important paper of the year.

I ran to the washroom, but not a single drop of water came out. Desperate, I washed my face with drinking water. My uniform was lying on the bed like a crumpled rag — no electricity, no iron. With shaking hands, I wore the wrinkled uniform. My school bag was a mess; everything was scattered on the floor. In a hurry, I grabbed whatever I could. When I bent down to wear my shoes, I realized in horror that I was wearing two completely different socks — one black, one white.

I had missed my van. The bus stop felt like an eternity. While waiting, a speeding bike splashed muddy water all over my uniform. On the bus, there was no seat. I stood on the stairs like a criminal, holding the railing tightly as the bus jerked violently.

By the time I reached school, I was one hour late. The principal blocked my way with a cold stare. “Write an application — now!” My pen refused to work. With trembling fingers, I borrowed one from a teacher. When I finally entered the class, the teacher announced loudly, “No extra time for latecomers!”

My heart sank when I looked at the question paper. I had prepared for the wrong subject. Tears burned my eyes. I wrote whatever little I remembered, my hand shaking. Just as I reached the last page, the bell rang. The teacher snatched the paper from my hands without mercy and ordered me to leave the class immediately.

I walked out of school with a heavy heart, feeling like the worst failure in the world. On the way home, I saw an old aunt’s groceries scattered all over the road. Without thinking, I stopped and helped her collect everything. When she looked at me with teary eyes and said, “Thank you so much, beta. Allah bless you,” and gave me two oranges; something inside me melted.

All the pain, embarrassment, and frustration of that terrible day suddenly disappeared. I walked home with a small smile, holding those two oranges like a precious gift.

Sometimes, even the worst day of your life can end with a tiny ray of kindness.
