Goats on the Lam
Freaky Friday Funny

Mamma and baby goats from the “father” in question. Photo by father, edited by author.
The old song goes, “Mama told me there would be days like this,” and it had certainly been a month this week. I had been struggling with sleep issues, exhaustion, stress and feeling run down. We are also swamped at work. Perhaps it was spring fever, but warm weather brought out the best and worst of people.
I work at a county park, which is a picturesque, peaceful setting for any workday and I love this job. Work was especially weird, as spring is budding and all the crazies were out.
Working for recreation/parks, isn’t like the TV show Parks and Rec where Amy Poehler is constantly pushing against the governmental glass ceiling. Sometimes the unexpected makes us laugh and scratch our collective heads, saying, “What were they thinking?”
I love the unexpected nature of the job. While the job is the same each day, it is different too. We often deal with the unexpected like weather emergencies, building closures, wet fields, missing children and irate taxpayers. On this particular freaky Friday, a man came in our office and said, “You probably haven’t heard this one before. I know this is weird but…”
I laughed; and gave him my “let’s see about that” looks. We have lots of strange occurrences to keep us on our toes.
“I am missing my goats.”
I laughed and said, “Ok. I haven’t heard that one before.”
He laughed too. “I just got them. One is the mamma goat… and the baby goat, he is black with a white spot.” He gestured with his phone there was a photo.
“I’m pretty sure if we see goats at the park, we will know they are your goats. Still, if you have a photo, it would be great.” He took my email address so he could send the photo. I told him we’d be on the lookout for the fugitives. He said they had run off after breakfast. Well, at least they won’t be hungry fugitive goats on the lam.
He told me their names, “Baaaarrrbra is the Mom. The baby is Vincent Van Goat.”
I let our staff know of the missing goats. Our custodian loves animals and she will definitely know what to do if she sees goats. She had one for years. As soon as I told her, she was outside, looking for the renegades.
After he left, I created a flyer and sent it out as an APB to our other offices nearby, to be on a goat lookout.

The renegades weren’t gone too long, about an hour later the man sent me an email. The goats had been returned. Not details forthcoming. Darn, I was curious what adventures Baaarrrrbra and Vincent Van Goat had been up to!
ABP on goats canceled. Week done, hello goat-free weekend!
