Pakistan’s Swat Valley on a Student Budget: How I Did It

I had heard about Swat Valley’s pine forests and rushing rivers, but I assumed it was too expensive for a student like me. Last year in July, I decided to find out. With a budget of 25000 PKR, I traveled from Hyderabad o Swat. Here’s exactly how much I spent and everything I learned.

How I got there

I left from Hyderabad on Monday at 2:55 PM. I took the train, which cost 3700 PKR. The journey took approximately 23 hours 35 minutes to reach Rawalpindi and from there I took coaster to reach swat which cost 1050 PKR.

Tip: Book your seat a week early to avoid the rush. I booked economy class, but other options include AC business class, AC standard class, parlour, and sleeper.

Where I Stayed

I stayed at Spogmai Hotel near the bus stand in Mingora. It cost 2,000 PKR per night. The room was clean with an attached bathroom, but hot water wasn’t available that morning despite the hotel being decent.

Alternative budget option: You can find more hotels on that same road, from low budget to high budget.

What I Ate

Local food was cheaper than I expected. A typical meal of chicken biryani cost 250 PKR per plate. Breakfast (chai + paratha) was around 200 PKR.

Must try: Mughal biryani near Bypass.

Top Places I Visited

1. Malam Jabba

· Entry fee: 2,500 PKR · Best for: Cable car views, snow, hiking · My experience: The cable car ride was good, but they do not make a proper circle to get you back to the starting point.

2. Mahodand Lake

· Jeep fare per person: 1,500 PKR · Best for: Boating, photography, picnic · My experience: The water of the lake is so different. Boating cost a little bit high — 2,000 PKR for a 10–15 minute ride.

3. Swat Museum

· Entry fee: 100 PKR · Best for: Cultural heritage of Swat and its people · My experience: The museum was well maintained, but photography was prohibited.

4. Ushu Forest kalaam

. Just one and half kilometre away from Kalaam bazaar and a good place for camping. Camping cost around 2500 PKR per night.

What Surprised Me

The locals were much friendlier than I expected. Wherever I went, people treated me like a guest.

Practical Tips for Students

1. Transport: Shared taxis are cheaper than private hires.
2. Packing: Carry a power bank, a raincoat, and hiking shoes.
3. Safety: Do not take shortcuts. Always take the route recommended by authorities.

• Yes — because Swat Valley is a big valley that is still undiscovered.

If you’re a student with a low or mid budget, Swat Valley is worth it. I haven’t seen such green and beautiful mountains yet.
