Why I love Javier Bardem & “Everybody Knows” (2018)

Disclaimer: My admiration for this man isn’t because of “F1” (2025). In fact, I haven’t even seen it yet! But, I already know it’s going to be good. Why? Because they made a smart move casting this absolute powerhouse of an actor.

I could have titled this as an “appreciation” post, but I have to admit my genuine love for this man’s work. I don’t know much about his personal life and honestly, I don’t want to. Many fans get curious about the private lives of their favourite celebrities, but for me, it’s different. Unless I meet someone and get to know them personally, I’m not interested in that side of things. What matters to me is his work. I re-watch his performances and could talk about them for hours — without needing his permission. Once a film is released, it belongs to the audience. We are free to love it, critique it, or even hate it.

Asghar Farhadi is a popular and truly revolutionary contemporary filmmaker. When he steps outside his own culture and explores new ones, he still manages to create the most authentic stories. What stands out even more is his ability to draw nuanced, natural performances from his actors, no matter where they’re from. He proved this well before Everybody Knows (2018), especially in Le Passé (2013).

Everybody Knows (2018) is about a family in a small town gathering for a wedding. Suddenly, something unfortunate happens after the ceremony. What happens next? What was the event that ruined the wedding? That’s what the film unravels, layer by layer.

Farhadi’s aim is not to make you feel the same way you did at the end of Memories of Murder (2000). And why should he? You’ve already felt that sense of unresolved tension. This isn’t a story about suspense or figuring out “who kidnapped whom.” Instead, it’s about human behavior in the face of an unprecedented, unpleasant event.

How far would you go in real life for your loved ones? This isn’t an extraordinary tale or a hyper-realistic docu-drama. It’s close to realism, almost like an Iranian film in its approach. Of course, Farhadi is the filmamker here.

Why do I love this film?

At its heart, it’s about a family of three sisters — the youngest is getting married. Laura, the middle sister, returns home with her daughter and son; her husband can’t make it because of work. The eldest sister’s daughter is going through a divorce, even as her younger aunt prepares for her wedding.

Paco (played by Javier Bardem), a local man who grew up with Laura, was once her lover decades ago. Now, he owns an estate in the town and is married to the beautiful Bea. There’s the grumpy old grandfather, and the friendly scenes of Paco and the eldest sister’s husband, Fernando, catching up and helping each other out at the local bar, set against the backdrop of Spanish village roads. All of this reminded me of a traditional wedding in a small South Indian village. It felt very personal.

Farhadi masterfully captures the small gestures at the start, establishing all the characters in a bright, joyous, festive atmosphere. But once the “bridge collapses,” the chaos unfolds, panic sets in. The moment Laura receives the first message from the kidnappers, she breaks down, crying out loud in the attic. Later, she tries to go upstairs but can’t — emotionally and physically exhausted after realising her daughter is missing. As a mother, she is not able to process the absence of her daughet. She calls out for her:

“Irene… Irene, honey…”

We don’t see Laura’s face in that moment. But, Penélope Cruz’s trembling voice makes it achingly real. That’s exactly how a mother would react — authentic and pure. Just with her voice alone, Cruz breaks your heart.

His Spanish films gave him room to shine as a performer with minimal makeup and CGI.

In Biutiful (2010), Before Night Falls (2000), The Sea Inside (2005), and Live Flesh (1997), he revealed his remarkable versatility. Then, in No Country for Old Men (2007), Skyfall (2012), and Mother! (2017), he continued to astonish us. And even in smaller roles — such as in Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008) and Dune (2021) — his charisma and screen presence remain undeniably powerful.

To me, his small nuance impress me a lot. In Everybody Knows (2018), when him and Laura seaches for Irene, he would slip when he goes downstairs. Because he is already drunk and now he is in panic. At that moment, for Paco, it’s just Laura’s daughter. When he realises Irene is his daughter too, his reaction shows he is shocked and surprised. As an actor to convince you and show you both reactions at the same time is a challenge but Javier nailed it.

While this film may not attain the lasting impact of Farhadi’s A Separation (2011) or About Elly (2009), its final act may disappoint some. To others, this slow-burn mystery thriller might play like an ordinary family drama — yet it remains one of my favourites and a constant source of inspiration. Rewatching it every year, it grows with me, making a strong impact.
