I Thought Starting Solids Would Be Simple… Then I Became a Mom

Nobody really tells you how emotional feeding your baby for the first time feels.

Before motherhood, I imagined introducing solids would be one of those cute milestone moments you capture in photos and laugh about later.

And yes… there were photos.

But there was also anxiety.

I remember sitting in my kitchen with a tiny spoon in one hand and Google searches in the other, wondering if I was doing everything wrong.

Was she ready? Would she choke? What if she hated it? What even counts as the “best” first food anymore?

That’s when avocado quietly became one of my biggest motherhood comforts.

Not because it was trendy.

But because it made those overwhelming early feeding days feel a little simpler.

The first food that actually felt manageable

The thing I loved most about avocado puree was how forgiving it felt.

No cooking. No complicated recipe. No pressure to be perfect.

Just one ripe avocado and a fork.

The first time I made it, I remember thinking:

Wait… that’s it?

After spending days researching homemade baby food, I almost couldn’t believe something this easy could actually be healthy too.

And honestly, avocado checks almost every box for a first food.

It’s naturally soft, gentle on tiny tummies, rich in healthy fats, and incredibly easy for babies to eat while they’re still learning textures.

The moment feeding stopped feeling scary

At first, my baby wasn’t completely convinced.

There were confused faces. Tiny spit-outs. Avocado literally everywhere except inside her mouth.

But after a few tries, something changed.

She started leaning toward the spoon.

Then came the little smile.

And suddenly feeding time stopped feeling stressful and started feeling… sweet.

That tiny shift gave me more confidence than I expected.

Because sometimes motherhood isn’t built through big moments. It’s built through tiny repeated ones.

The combination my baby loved most

A few days later, I mixed avocado with banana.

Game changer.

The sweetness of banana made the puree creamier and more familiar for her, and it quickly became our comfort combo during chaotic mornings.

Even now, I still think that mixture saved me during those sleep-deprived early months.

Some other combinations that worked beautifully for us:

  • Avocado + banana
  • Avocado + apple puree
  • Avocado + sweet potato
  • Avocado + yogurt for older babies

The sweet potato version especially became one of our favorite evening meals because it felt filling, gentle, and calming before bedtime.

What I wish someone had told me sooner

Babies don’t eat the same way every day.

Some days they’ll happily finish every spoonful.

Other days they’ll reject the exact same food they loved yesterday while staring directly into your soul

And somehow… both are completely normal.

I spent so much energy worrying whether I was “doing feeding right” that I forgot something important:

Introducing solids is not about perfection.

It’s about helping your baby slowly build trust with food.

And honestly?

We’re learning alongside them.

A few things that genuinely helped me

If you’re just starting solids, here’s what made things easier for me:

  • Use very ripe avocados for smoother texture
  • Start small, even 1–2 teaspoons is enough
  • Add breast milk or water if needed
  • Don’t panic if baby refuses it initially

Sometimes babies simply need time.

And sometimes moms do too.

Motherhood can make you question yourself constantly. But in the middle of messy kitchens and avocado-covered babies… you slowly realize you’re doing better than you think.
