Why Reading Books Still Matters in the Digital Era
In today’s digital world, almost everything is available instantly. If we want to learn something, we watch a YouTube video. If we want entertainment, we scroll endlessly through social media. Audiobooks, podcasts, short videos — knowledge is everywhere.
For a long time, I also believed the same thing:
“Why should I read books when I can consume the same content through videos or audio?”
But my perspective completely changed because of one experience in my life.
There was a phase when I was struggling to make an important decision. Everyone around me had advice — family, friends, mentors — and each person believed their opinion was the right one. But for me, choosing a path became emotionally exhausting.
To distract myself from overthinking, I randomly picked up a book: The Alchemist.
I can honestly say that reading that book was one of the best decisions I ever made.
The book didn’t magically solve my problems. But it changed the way I looked at life. It made me more optimistic, calmer, and more connected to my own thoughts. Most importantly, it helped me trust myself enough to take decisions with clarity.
From that point onward, reading became a part of my everyday life.
And even today, I can confidently say that books continue to shape the way I think, learn, and grow.
Why Reading Books Is Worth It
Reading offers something that digital content often cannot: silence, depth, and self-connection.
When you read a book, you slow down. You think. You imagine. You reflect.
Over time, I realized reading helps in many ways:
- It helps you connect with yourself
- It reduces endless scrolling and digital distraction
- It improves positivity and emotional balance
- It strengthens concentration and patience
- It increases knowledge and perspective
- It improves creativity and imagination
- It reduces screen fatigue and eye strain
Unlike short-form content, books allow us to stay with an idea long enough to truly understand it.
Books I Loved as a Beginner
If you are someone trying to start reading, you do not need to begin with difficult or highly intellectual books. Start with books that keep you emotionally connected and curious.
Some beginner-friendly books I personally enjoyed are:
- The Alchemist
- Chanakya (The life story of a boy , who is obsessed with chankya’s neeti)
- The Forest of Enchantments
Each of these books gave me a different perspective on life, mindset, and human nature.
Final Thoughts
Reading books is not about becoming “more intellectual.” It is about creating space to think deeply in a world that constantly demands our attention.
In an era of endless notifications and scrolling, books help us pause, reflect, and reconnect with ourselves.
So if you have never been a reader before, start small. Pick any genre you genuinely enjoy. Read a few pages every day.
You may not realize it immediately, but one book can quietly change the way you see your life — just like it did for me.
