Most people assume that more breath means more health. Deeper + faster = more oxygen. But the science tells a more nuanced story, and the data behind it should make you reconsider every breath you take.
Intermittent hypoxia, the deliberate, controlled reduction of oxygen through breath holds, is one of the most underexplored performance and longevity tools available.
Brief periods of reduced oxygen followed by recovery trigger a cascade of beneficial adaptations: red blood cell production, growth hormone release, improved cardiovascular efficiency and enhanced stress resilience. Done correctly and safely, it is essentially a free, equipment-free form of altitude training you can do from the comfort of your own home.
Why It Works
The urge to inhale during a breath hold is triggered not by low oxygen but by rising CO2. By gradually extending your tolerance to CO2, you train the body to breathe less frequently, more efficiently and more calmly under pressure. Lower breathing rates are associated with lower resting heart rate, better heart rate variability and improved stress resilience.
The physiological cascade triggered by intermittent hypoxia goes considerably deeper than most people realise. Breath holds stimulate the release of erythropoietin (EPO) from the kidneys, the same hormone that drives red blood cell production and improves oxygen carrying capacity in altitude athletes. They also trigger the release of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), a signalling protein that promotes the growth of new blood vessels and improves circulatory efficiency throughout the body. Perhaps most remarkably, intermittent hypoxia has also been shown to mobilise stem cells from the bone marrow into circulation, supporting tissue repair, cellular regeneration and long-term resilience at a biological level that few other accessible practices can match. (Stem cells can cost up to £25,000 btw!)
The spleen also contracts during a breath hold, releasing a reserve of oxygenated red blood cells into circulation, a response that strengthens with regular practice. Research has additionally documented the release of growth hormone during breath hold practices, supporting body composition and recovery.
Together, these responses make deliberate breath hold training one of the most biochemically rich interventions available, requiring nothing but time, intention and a safe place to sit.
What To Do
Once a day, sitting comfortably at home (preferably with others nearby) practise extending your breath hold after a relaxed, normal exhale. Not a deep inhale. Perform a few slow warm up breathes, and then hold at the end of your final exhale.
Start from wherever you are, 10 seconds, 20, 30, and note your time. Each day, try to extend it slightly, building gradually over weeks toward a 60 second hold or beyond. Remember to be patient. The goal is to gradually improve your CO2 tolerance, not get dizzy.
This is not the highly touted Wim Hof method, which involves deliberate hyperventilation before breath holds and should never be practised near water or alone. This is a gentler, progressive practice of CO2 tolerance training.
Once a day, after a normal exhale, hold your breath and note your time.
Do not strain. Just push yourself a few seconds further each time. Build gently, day by day, and track your progress over the week.
Once you reach 60 seconds or more, you’ll be able to slow down your breathing and extend your lifespan one patient breath at a time.
