We just returned from a family vacation at Australia’s Gold Coast. On a quiet afternoon, we drove up into the hinterland above the Gold Coast to visit the glow worm caves at Mount Tamborine. My kids wanted to see the lights. I walked out of that cave thinking about enterprise planning!

The guide asks everyone to be silent, and then turns off the lights.

Total darkness. Then, slowly, a galaxy appears above your head.

Hundreds of tiny, cold-blue lights flicker across the ceiling — not stars, but living creatures. Glow worms. Each no bigger than your fingernail, barely a millimetre wide, and each quietly executing one of nature’s most sophisticated hunting strategies.

Meet the World’s Most Strategic Hunter

The glow worm (Arachnocampa luminosa) is found across parts of Australia and New Zealand. At 2–4 cm long and barely a millimetre in diameter, it is, by any physical measure, an unremarkable creature.

Yet it hunts and consumes insects — like houseflies — whose body width can be multiple times the glow worm’s own thickness. How? Not through size, strength, or speed. Through an elegantly engineered system of attraction, capture, and conversion.

Step 1 — Build the infrastructure. The glow worm larvae spin a silk hammock anchored to the ceiling of the cave. The glow worm does not win because it is large. It wins because every part of its system — infrastructure, signal, capture, extraction, release — is connected, calibrated, and continuously responsive to its environment. That is precisely the capability that separates organisations that thrive from those that quietly disappear from the list.

The glow worm does not start spinning threads when it is already hungry. The infrastructure is built first — the foundation for everything that follows. Many organisations do the opposite: they begin planning reactively, only after a crisis forces them to.

The business parallel: Integrated planning platforms, real-time data visibility, and cross-functional collaboration models need to be in place before disruption arrives. An enterprise planning system that connects Finance, Sales, Supply Chain, and HR in a shared, live model is not a luxury — it is the hammock from which everything else hangs.

2. Use Your Signal to Attract, Not Chase

The glow worm does not exhaust itself chasing flies through the dark. It creates a signal — its light — that draws opportunity to it. This is differentiation at its most efficient: the right signal, pointed at the right audience, in the right environment.

The business parallel: Organisations with sophisticated planning systems can read market signals early — shifts in customer demand, competitor moves, emerging risks — and position themselves to capture opportunity before others even see it. Those without that visibility spend enormous energy and cost chasing opportunities they were never set up to win.

3. Act Fast and Decisively When the Moment Arrives

The window between a fly entering the cave and hitting the threads is a fraction of a second. Once trapped, the glow worm moves immediately. The system is pre-designed to execute without delay — there is no committee meeting, no approval chain, no quarterly review cycle.

The business parallel: In a market where AI, regulation, and customer expectations shift quarterly, decision latency is fatal. A planning system where insight flows directly into action — where a demand signal in Supply Chain automatically triggers a financial reforecast and a workforce adjustment — is the difference between capturing the moment and watching it pass.

As I reflect on over two decades advising organisations across Asia Pacific on enterprise performance management the single largest common gap I observe is not a lack of data, technology, or talent.

It is a lack of a cohesive, connected plan that can evolve as the environment changes.

The glow worm does not have a rigid annual hunting plan. Its system is continuously calibrated: when light levels change, it adjusts its glow. When threads break, it rebuilds. When prey patterns shift, it adapts. Every signal from the environment feeds back into the system in real time.

Agile and collaborative planning — where Finance, Sales, Supply Chain, and HR are not operating in siloed spreadsheets but in a shared, real-time model — is no longer a competitive advantage. It is a survival requirement.

The organisations winning in 2026 and beyond will be those that have built their own version of the glow worm’s system: a planning platform that attracts the right signals, captures opportunity precisely when it appears, extracts maximum value efficiently, and releases what no longer serves growth.

The next time someone tells you that your organisation is too small to compete, or too resource-constrained to win against a larger rival, remember the creature on the ceiling of a cave in Mount Tamborine.

Two centimetres long. Thinner than a thread. And one of nature’s most effective hunters.
