I Spent a Day Building a Break Timer Nobody Asked For (And I Think That’s Why It Works)

Most break timers are just countdown clocks with a ding. You dismiss them without moving. Then 90 minutes pass and your lower back reminds you that you’re mortal.

I’ve tried them all. Pomodoro apps, calendar reminders, sticky notes that say “STAND UP” in red. They work for one day, then become part of the furniture.

So I built something different. I called it SeatRisk™.

— - The core idea: make sitting feel dangerous

The insight I kept coming back to: we don’t respond to future consequences. We respond to what’s happening right now.

A countdown timer tells you “a break is coming.” SeatRisk tells you “your health is draining this second.” That’s a different feeling.

While you work, two things happen simultaneously:

  • Your virtual net worth grows ($2 per minute)
  • Your health score slowly drains

If you sit for 60 continuous minutes, or let your health hit zero: Game Over. Session wiped.

The loss-aversion is real. Watching that health bar drop is weirdly uncomfortable in a way that a countdown never is.

— -

  • +$100, +$500, +$1,000, +$2,000 (common)
  • +$4,000 jackpot (rare, but probability increases with each break)
  • −$200 (yes, you can lose money)

Variable reward schedules are the same mechanism behind slot machines and push notifications. I’m not ashamed to borrow it for something that’s actually good for you.

The jackpot probability climbing with each break is the key design detail — it rewards the people who keep going, not just lucky one-timers.

— - What I learned from building it

I rewrote this thing more times than I want to admit. Each version taught me something:

Version 1: Pure timer with a health bar. Boring. Nobody cared about a health bar going down slowly.

Version 2: Added dice rolls. Suddenly breaks felt like something to look forward to.

Version 3: Added the ergonomic investments (buy a standing desk or ergonomic chair that changes the game mechanics). Now there’s a daily decision that makes you think about your setup.

Version 4+: Leaderboard, streaks, session history. Now there’s a reason to come back tomorrow.

The tool that “nobody asked for” turned into the tool I actually use myself every workday.

— - Try it

SeatRisk™ — Free Gamified Break Timer (https://ordinarymantrying.com/tools/standup-timer.html)

No signup. No download. Works on mobile too.

If you hit the jackpot on your first roll, I want to hear about it.
