For the Heart That Had to Leave First

The One Who Leaves First Suffers Too

The One Who Leaves First Suffers Too

They say, “Let them.” Let them miss you. Let them feel the weight of your absence. Let them sit with the silence you used to fill. Let them realise what it means when you are no longer there, when your name no longer appears, when your presence becomes something they can only remember but not reach.

But what does that do to someone like me?

The trouble is that absence is never one-sided. If I create distance, I have to live inside it too. If I let them feel my absence, I feel theirs even more. If I step away so they can understand what life is like without me, I am the one who has to survive the emptiness first. I am the one left counting the spaces where they used to be. I am the one pretending distance is strength, when really, it feels like another kind of breaking.

They say, “Let them,” as though distance is a lesson that only one heart has to learn. As though absence settles gently, without leaving its fingerprints on everything it touches. As though silence is merely quiet, and not a room that grows larger each night. They speak of stepping away as if it is an act of freedom, but they never speak of what happens to the one who walks away carrying every memory with them.

They tell me to let them wonder what it is like without me, yet every day I find myself wandering through the ache of what it is like without them. The thought of becoming a memory in their life is painful enough, but somehow it hurts more knowing they are slowly becoming one in mine.

Maybe letting them is not the hardest part. Maybe the hardest part is letting myself feel everything that comes after. The missing. The waiting. The quiet hope I try to bury. The pain of choosing myself while still wishing they would choose me too.

So yes, let them. Let them miss me, if they will. Let them feel my absence, if they can. Let them learn what it means to lose the version of me that stayed, reached, waited, and understood.

But if I am being honest, I do not know if I am strong enough to turn this into a lesson. I do not know if I want them to realise my worth only after I am gone. There is nothing comforting about being missed when all I ever wanted was to be cherished while I was still there.

Maybe that is what makes this so difficult for someone like me. I do not know how to make peace with the idea of being missed later when all I ever wanted was to be cherished now. I do not want my absence to teach lessons my presence never could.

I do not want to become a memory before I am valued. I wanted to be seen while I was still here, loved while I was still reaching, chosen while I was still choosing them. And perhaps that is the deepest ache of all… not that they miss me now, but that they could not hold me close when they still had the chance.
