WHY AM I PURSUING NISM CERTIFICATIONS AS A B.COM STUDENT…..

I still remember the moment I first scrolled through internship requirements on LinkedIn.
Every single finance role I clicked on, be it Equity Research Associate, Derivatives Traders, Investment Analyst had a line buried somewhere in the description: “NISM certification preferred.” or worse “NISM certification mandatory.”
I am a first year B.Com student and I had barely finished my first set of financial accounting lectures. And eventually I am coming to realize that my degree alone no matter how solid would not be enough. So I started researching. And what I found surprised me.
WHAT EVEN IS NISM?
NISM stands for the National institute of securities markets. It was created by SEBI, the same people who regulate the entire stock market. SEBI built NISM to make sure that anyone working in India’s financial markets actually know what they are talking about.
When you pass a NISM certification, you are not just collecting another certificate. You are proving that you understand a specific area of finance like mutual funds, derivatives, research analysis, or whatever you choose.
And like college exams which accepts rote learning, this exam doesn’t. You cannot just memorize everything and throw up on paper. These exams are designed to test whether you actually get it.
THE CERTIFICATIONS I AM LOOKING AT-
There are more than 20 NISM certifications. I picked three that actually aligned with my finance career goals.
THE CERTIFICATION I CHOOSE FIRST
I decided to start with Research Analyst. Why? Because I want to learn how to actually look at a company and figure out if its stock is worth buying or selling. This certification teaches you how to read a balance sheet like a story, not a bunch of random numbers. It covers valuation methods, fancy terms like DCF and P/E ratio but explained in a way that actually makes sense.
Have you ever watched a finance youtuber say “this stock is undervalued” and wondered how do they know that? This certification teaches you exactly that.
No, it does not make me an expert. But it gives me a solid foundation and that is exactly what I need right now.
After this, I plan to add two more.
One is Series-VIII: Equity Derivatives. Fancy name, I know. But here is what it actually means. Have you ever seen someone talk about “F&O Trading” or “buying options” and felt completely lost? same here. This certification teaches you how futures and options actualy work. not textbook definitions, real stuff. Like how much money you actually lose if a trade goes bad. Think of a futures contract like booking a movie ticket in advance where you lock in the price today. An option is like paying a small fee to have the choice of buying something later, but you are not forced to. That is the basic idea.
The other is Series-V-A: Mutual Funds Distributors. This is the beginner friendly one. No negative marking lower passing score. It teaches you how mutual funds actually work, how to figure out if a fund is risky or safe, and the basic rules of the game.
Three certifications, three semesters maybe. Total cost around Rs.4,500. Less than what most people spend on food delivery in a month
But again, this is my plan. You do you.
A FRIENDLY SUGGESTION, NOT A RULE.
If you are a first year student interested in finance and this post made you curious, here is something that worked for me. Take it or leave it.
I am starting with the Research Analyst certification. It is not the easiest one, but it teaches you skills that actually matter if you want to understand stocks, companies, and investing.
You could do the same or you could start with mutual funds distributors if you want something lighter first. Or equity derivatives if you are more interested in trading.
There is no right order. The only wrong order is not starting at all.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR MY LARGER GOALS.
Let me be completely honest with you. NISM certifications alone will not get me a job. they will not guarantee me a seat at an IIM. They are not some magic key that opens every door.
So why am I doing them?
Because they show something marks and degrees cannot. They show that I was curious enough to learn things on my own. They show that I can open a workbook, watch YouTube videos, and figure out things without needing a professor holding my hand.
When I sit for an interview three years from now, anyone can say “I am interested in finance.” But I want to show proof. I want to point to my NISM certificate and say, “I did not just say it. I actually went and learned it.”
My 10th and 12th marks are exactly 80%. That is not going to impress anyone at a top IIM. I cannot change that.
But I can change what I do next. I can build a stack of small wins like certifications, blog posts, internships that tell a story. The story is not “I am a genius.” The story is “I started early and i stayed consistent.”
That is all NISM is for me. Not a guarantee. Just proof.
