The Spiritual Month of Islam

The spiritual month of Islam is Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. It is a time of deep reflection, communal prayer, and self-discipline for Muslims worldwide.

Beyond simply abstaining from food and drink, it is viewed as a “marathon for the soul” — a period to reset intentions and strengthen one’s connection with the Divine.

Core Pillars of the Month

  • Fasting (Sawm): Muslims fast from dawn (Fajr) until sunset (Maghrib). This includes refraining from food, liquids, smoking, and intimate relations.
  • The Quran: Ramadan is known as the “Month of the Quran” because it is believed the first verses were revealed to Prophet Muhammad during this time. Many aim to complete a full reading of the book.
  • Charity (Zakat and Sadaqah): Generosity is amplified. There is a mandatory charity called Zakat al-Fitr given before the month ends to ensure the poor can celebrate the upcoming holiday.
  • Night Prayers (Tarawih): Extra congregational prayers are held at mosques every night, where long portions of the Quran are recited.

The Surah In Quran Which Describes The Ramzan

(Al-Baqarah 2:183)

O believers! Fasting is prescribed for you — as it was for those before you — so perhaps you will become mindful ˹of Allah˺.

(Al-Baqarah 2:184)

˹Fast a˺ prescribed number of days. But whoever of you is ill or on a journey, then ˹let them fast˺ an equal number of days ˹after Ramaḍân˺. For those who can only fast with extreme difficulty, compensation can be made by feeding a needy person ˹for every day not fasted˺. But whoever volunteers to give more, it is better for them. And to fast is better for you, if only you knew.

(Al-Baqarah 2:185)

Ramaḍân is the month in which the Quran was revealed as a guide for humanity with clear proofs of guidance and the decisive authority. So whoever is present this month, let them fast. But whoever is ill or on a journey, then ˹let them fast˺ an equal number of days ˹after Ramaḍân˺. Allah intends ease for you, not hardship, so that you may complete the prescribed period and proclaim the greatness of Allah for guiding you, and perhaps you will be grateful.
