Why Leaving a Covert Narcissist Addict Damages Your Nervous System

How to start healing from the trauma bond with Mindshift Micro Meditations

When people tell you to just get over it and move on, they just don’t get it.

For real, people do not understand that there is something much stronger and deeper than emotional connection. Sure, there’s also all the time and energy (and likely money) you have invested into the relationship, and that is hard to walk away from. But that sickening pull that creates stomach issues, anxiety, digestive problems, trouble sleeping, and headaches; that is a literal physical addiction to the abuser and the cycle of abuse. In this article I explain how it works and give you four Mindshift Micro Meditation Hacks to break out of panic mode and start healing in less than 5 minutes.

I know firsthand because I was in a relationship with an addict alcoholic who is also a covert (vulnerable) narcissist. Always the victim, using my empathy against me, and so damn manipulative that had I have not seen literal GPS data and texts to other women, I might still be believing his bullshit to this day (that fake future and perfect mask person are so damn hard to break away from).

This really pisses me off, because five years after leaving, I can look back and see it so clearly. If you are in it, please listen to me! That feeling that is tugging at you, IS NOT LOVE. It is a trauma bond. I’ll explain it in this article and give you a path to break free and understand why it is so hard for us.

Trauma Bonding: A psychological and physiological phenomenon where a person develops a deep attachment to their abuser which is reinforced by a cyclical pattern of abuse, devaluation, or neglect, followed by intermittent bursts of warmth, validation, or affection. This cycle creates a literal physical dependency, a biochemical trauma bond. The unpredictable switch between fighting and relief floods the nervous system with alternating waves of cortisol and adrenaline (stress hormones) and dopamine and oxytocin (reward and bonding hormones). Over time, the survivor’s brain and body become physically addicted to the neurochemical rollercoaster, causing them to experience acute, physical withdrawal symptoms when trying to break free.

Read that last sentence again and again. It’s not you, you are not weak, it’s not love, and there is a reason you can’t “just move on.” There is a biological, chemical addiction to this jerk!

People who haven’t lived it don’t understand. Hell, even therapists who sit there listening to you with their “trauma informed” training cannot really understand, unless they have also lived it.

No one understands because this shit does not make sense at all, and the feeling can only be known by those of us who have felt it!!

The Double Trauma Bond (Biochemical Addiction)

When we break free from the cycle of abuse, a survivor undergoes a literal chemical detox. You are not just emotionally heartbroken; you are physically breaking a severe biochemical cortisol and dopamine dependency. At the same time, the addict-narcissist is treating you like a drug by draining your emotional resources for their “supply” before moving to their next fix. It’s a very complex dependency, it’s not love, and it is NOT a healthy relationship (nor will it ever be).

And when they feel us slipping away, they turn it around and say things like:

  • “You’re addicted to drama, why don’t you stop making up problems that don’t exist?”
  • “You can’t just let us be happy, you always have to start something.”
  • “Look at how crazy you’re acting right now. You’re the one who needs help, not me.”
  • “After everything we’ve been through, you’re just going to throw us away and blame it on me? Like you’re so perfect??”
  • “You know that nobody else will ever put up with you or love you the way I do.”

This makes us doubt ourselves in the ultimate form of DARVO and Gaslighting. They are masters at manipulation!

Gaslighting is a psychological manipulation tactic where an abuser distorts the truth to make you question your own sanity, memory, or perception of reality until you completely second-guess yourself.

DARVO stands for Deny, Attack, and Reverse Victim and Offender. It is a specific manipulation cycle where an abuser denies their behavior, attacks the person confronting them, and successfully twists the situation to make themselves look like the actual victim.

The Biological Loop and How Toxic Partners Mimic Addictive Drugs

To understand why it’s so damn hard to just walk away, we have to look at what this rollercoaster of the abuse cycle actually does to your brain chemistry. When you love a covert narcissist who is also battling active addiction, your life is dictated by their chaos. You are constantly swinging between extreme highs and devastating lows. Walking on eggshells. Making sure not to upset them, confront them, or (God forbid) hold them accountable for anything.

During the “good” times, the love-bombing, the promises to change, the rare moments of calm; your brain gets flooded with dopamine and oxytocin. It feels amazing. But then the other shoe drops. The silent treatment comes back, withdrawal of affection, the lies start up again, and suddenly your system is flooded with cortisol and adrenaline. You are living in a constant state of fight-or-flight.

Understanably, your brain becomes physically addicted to the unpredictable cycle of relief. You aren’t chasing their love anymore; you are chasing the moment they stop being cruel, start “loving” you again, and make up with all their false promises. Exactly how an addict hooks into their next fix. Yes, it is this fucked up and it takes actually realizing it to really break free.

I remember wanting so badly to believe in the fake future he would give me glimpses of. He knew everything I wanted, and would even play super-dad to our daughter when he was cycling back to the “good guy.” I wanted so badly to believe that was the real person. I was addicted to the fantasy and the feeling I would get when I thought everything was finally going to be okay. The caveat is, had this have been the real person, had he have given one actual shit about me (or our daughter), this would have been evident after leaving him. Instead, he has barely seen our child over the last five years, makes up excuses, and blames everyone else for why he cannot be present. It’s the exact same guy he actually was. But I was in love with a mirage, a fake person that was crafted specifically for me to love, and a trauma bond cycle that kept me craving his affection. Trust me in this my friend, how they treat you IS the real them. If you are experiencing the pattern and cycle of abuse, it is not going to get better. If you feel that relief when they make up after going cold, silent, yelling at you, or worse (over and over again), this IS a trauma bond. But you can, and WILL break free!

Narcissistic Supply and Substance Abuse is A Dual Addiction

This section applies to the relationship where you are also with an addict as I was. Here is the sickest part of the dynamic: while they are using drugs, alcohol, or behaviors to numb themselves, they are using you to regulate their own unstable ego. In the psychology world, they call this narcissistic supply and substance abuse, and it’s a terrifying mix. You are nothing more than another thing to make them feel better, and that is why they can treat us the way they do.

They drain your energy, your stability, and your sanity just to keep themselves feeling better. Every time they project their shame onto you, blame you for their problems, or make you feel small, they are feeding off of your emotional reaction. They suck your life out like a toxic energy vampire.

The result? You are left completely energetically, physically, and emotionally depleted. Your body eventually breaks down under the stress. This is where the somatic symptoms of narcissistic abuse come from:

  • Chronic fatigue and brain fog
  • Food intolerances
  • Autoimmune flare-ups
  • Headaches
  • Anxiety
  • Constant gut issues

Your body has been living in a literal war zone, and it’s physically screaming for help in the only way it can.

I had all of these problems when I was with him. My health was in constant decline, and doctors couldn’t figure out what was going on. Blame it on age, post pregnancy, allergies, or maybe I’m making it all up… sound familiar?

In reality, the emotional abuse was causing all of it. I know this because year by year after leaving, symptoms have been getting better or disappearing completely, and I am not doing anything differently like exercising more or taking pharmaceuticals. The difference is distance from the abuser, learning about how this type of abuse affects our physical body, and healing. You will heal too, in the next section I’ll share some of the ways to get started.

Somatic Healing and Moving from Cognitive Awareness to Nervous System Freedom

You can read every book on narcissism, watch every YouTube video, and intellectually understand that this person is terrible for you. But until you heal the physical body, you will still feel that toxic pull and even be susceptible to their bullshit and pulling you back in (don’t fall for it). True recovery requires nervous system regulation after abuse.

You have to treat your recovery for what it actually is: a literal physical withdrawal from a biological addiction. When you go no-contact, your body is going to go through an actual clinical detox. Your hands might shake, your chest will ache, and you won’t be able to sleep. You might have panic attacks. Memory problems. And lots of stomach issues. That is not a sign that you made the wrong choice! It’s actually the brain chemicals leaving your system.

To heal, we have to move past just thinking about the trauma and start focusing on somatic healing. This means letting your physical system process the withdrawal safely through grounding exercises, strict boundaries, and giving yourself the time and self-love to rebuild from the inside out.

Long after you leave them, your body remembers. You are triggered by certain noises. A text message sends your heart racing. You logically know you are safe, but your nervous system is still trapped in the survival mode it needed just to endure the unpredictable cycles of an addicted covert narcissist partner. To heal, you have to stop trying to intellectually reason your way out of the trauma.

For me, five years later, loud sighs and stomps are still triggering. The sound of a screen door slamming gives me a panic attack. It’s intriguing and annoying how our nervous system stores these symbols and reacts to “danger,” even when the danger is long gone.

Mindshift Micro Meditations and Hacks

Start healing your nervous system and finding regulation after abuse with these quick techniques.

The Immediate Brain Reset

Time: 1 minute

When your nervous system is trapped in a panic loop, you can’t just tell your brain to calm down, you have to use your body to force it. This is a literal biological hack that instantly opens the pressure valve on your stress response.

  • How to do it: First, let your shoulders drop. Take a deep breath all the way down into your lower belly, feeling it expand. Once your lungs feel full, suck in one more tiny, sharp sip of air through your nose to completely max out your lungs. Then, let out a long, slow, heavy releasing sigh through your mouth.
  • The Mindshift Hack: Doing this just three times recalibrates the oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in your blood, forcing your heart rate to slow down which signals your brain that the “danger” has passed.

The 5–7–8 Safe Space Breath

Time: 3 minutes

If you just received a toxic text, heard a triggering sound, or feel that wave of anxiety hitting, this is your safety net. It shifts your body out of fight-or-flight by focusing on a prolonged, controlled exhalation.

  • How to do it: Relax your shoulders and let them drop. Take a deep breath all the way down into your lower belly, feeling it expand as you inhale quietly through your nose for a count of 5. Hold that breath at the top for a count of 7. Then, make a soft whoosh sound as you exhale completely through your mouth for a slow count of 8.
  • The Magic: When your exhale is longer than your inhale, it physicalizes a brake pedal for your racing heart. It stimulates the vagus nerve, pulling you out of the panic and placing you firmly back in control of your own body.

Vibration to Heal

Time: 2 to 3 minutes

Your vagus nerve passes right by your vocal cords. You can actually use physical vibrations to stimulate it, sending a direct safety signal to your heart and stomach. This is incredibly grounding and perfect for soothing those somatic gut issues and headaches.

  • How to do it: Sit comfortably, relax your shoulders, and drop them away from your ears. Take a deep breath all the way down into your lower belly, feeling it expand. As you exhale, close your mouth a little and make a sustained, low-pitched humming sound, like a heavy, vibrating “mmm” or “vooo” until you are completely out of air. Focus entirely on feeling the physical vibration in your throat, chest, and jaw. Play with different sounds and feel their vibrations.
  • The Mindshift Hack: The vocal vibration physically stimulates the vagal path, slowing your heart rate and releasing a wave of calming neurochemicals to soothe a hyper-vigilant nervous system.

The “Safe Room” Scan

Time: 2 minutes

When trauma triggers hit, your vision naturally tunnels and it might feel like you are going to pass out because your body is preparing and looking for the threat. To break the physical panic, you have to consciously break that visual tunnel and force your brain to register that you are safe right now.

  • How to do it: Before you look around, consciously relax your shoulders. Take a deep breath all the way down into your lower belly, feeling it expand, and let it out slowly. Now, without moving your head, slowly let your eyes scan the room. Let your gaze rest on three specific, mundane objects around you (a coffee mug, a plant, a pen). Really look at them. Name them silently, noting their color and shape. Use your peripheral (side) vison to expand your gaze. Your eyes might even go a bit blurry and out of focus, which is a good thing. Let this come naturally as you open your field of vision.
  • The Mindshift Hack: Widening your visual field to take in peripheral surroundings tells your amygdala that no predator is jumping out at you. It takes you out of the old trauma memory and anchors you right here, in the safe present where nothing can hurt you.

Breaking a biochemical trauma bond is not willpower or simply “just get over it.”

It’s a physical detox, just like a drug (because it actually IS your own brain chemicals). The time is now to stop beating yourself up for the lingering anxiety and start giving your nervous system tools to feel safe. You aren’t weak. Your body is just doing exactly what it evolved to do, survive. Give yourself the love you give everyone else, and take a few minutes out of your day to try these Mindshift Micro Meditations to help you on your healing path.

If you’ve made it to the other side of this, what was the physical symptom or environmental trigger that hung around the longest or was the worst for you? If you’re in the middle of the detox right now, which of these micro-meditations feels like something you can actually handle trying today?
