What You Give Is a Reflection of Who You Are

Not everything we give is returned, but everything we give reveals the kind of heart we choose to have.

♡

We often think the value of what we give depends on whether it comes back to us. I think its truest value lies in the person it allows us to become.

Sometimes I wonder why we do the things we do. Why we stay up a little later to help someone, remember the smallest details about the people we love, send a thoughtful message, or quietly make someone’s day a little lighter.

We spend so much of our lives searching for reasons, reason for this or that, trying to understand the purpose behind every choice. But I don’t think everything beautiful begins with a reason. Sometimes it begins with an instinct, an almost unexplainable feeling that simply says, give.

Not because someone asked you to. Not because they’ll do the same for you.

But because something within you feels more alive when you do.

*Non-members can read here.*

I think one of the quietest joys of being human is discovering that we are capable of bringing a little warmth into someone else’s life. There is something deeply moving about watching a person you love smile because of something you did, even if it was something small. A shared meal. A handwritten note. A favorite flower. Sitting beside them in silence when words are no longer enough. These moments rarely make headlines, but I think they are the moments that quietly hold a life together.

People often remember what you achieved, what you earned, or what you became. But I find myself remembering something else entirely. I remember how people made me feel. I remember kindness that arrived without being asked for. I remember the people who noticed what others overlooked. Those are the things that stay.

Sometimes we keep a quiet score in our hearts. I did this for them, but they didn't do the same for me. I understand that feeling. We all do.

But I've also learned that love rarely looks identical from one person to another. Someone may not return your kindness in the exact way you expected, yet they may be loving you in a language you haven't learned to notice.

We can miss love when we only look for it in the shape we imagined.

That doesn’t mean we should ignore relationships that leave us feeling unseen. But it does remind us not to let comparison become louder than compassion.

I think what we give says far more about us than what we receive. Kindness, generosity, patience, tenderness these are not only gifts we offer other people. They are reflections of the person we are choosing to become. Every act of love quietly shapes the heart that gives it.

So if your instinct is to care, to encourage, to remember birthdays, to hold doors open, to write thoughtful letters, to check in on someone, to make tea for a tired friend, don’t lose that part of yourself simply because the world doesn’t always mirror it back. There are parts of our souls that are worth protecting, even when they go unnoticed.

Keep that heart alive.

Because one day, when you look back on your life, I don’t think you’ll remember every accomplishment or every perfectly planned day. I think we all remember the love you gave without calculation, the hands you held, the people you comforted, and the moments when your heart quietly chose kindness simply because it could.

Perhaps that is one of the most beautiful ways to leave a mark on this world, not by asking what it gave you, but by remembering what you were able to give it.

It’s like, does you make difference by giving your presence and heart to something that is matter to you.

There is something sacred about protecting the part of yourself that still chooses to love gently, care deeply, and give freely. Not because the world will always return it, but because it is one of the truest parts of who you are. And don’t forget to offer that same kindness to yourself. Your own heart deserves to be held with the same tenderness you so freely give to others.

I learned that every mortal will taste death. But only some will taste life.~Rupi Kaur

And perhaps tasting life means allowing your heart to remain generous, even in a world that cannot always repay it.

Sometimes it’s the soft balance that life keeps teaching us, to remain soft without losing ourselves, to give without keeping score and to let our kindness be an expression of who we are, not like a transaction we hope the world will repay it.
