Romans 7:1 NIV

[1] Do you not know, brothers and sisters—for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law has authority over someone only as long as that person lives?

Written Law

Law didn’t begin as a written code—it became clear through Moses, but its roots are already present in human conscience and moral awareness. Paul is not teaching Roman civil law. He’s explaining the Law of Moses, and how it relates to Sin, Human nature, and Salvation. Although Romans 7 talked law, but the law didn’t exactly start with Adam. ✔️ Before Adam? No discussion of law system—Adam is the starting point of humanity. ✔️ From Adam to Moses: No formal law system — Sin existed, Death existed, and Moral awareness existed. ✔️ From Moses onward: Law becomes clear, defined, and accountable for the Jews.

👉 So the issue is not the law — is human nature (sin). Romans 7

People know the law; but still fail to follow it.

🔑 Romans 5:13: Sin existed before the law was given, but it wasn’t counted the same way without the law.

👉 Law as a system did not start with Adam but Moses. But people still sinned, there was moral awareness, just not codified. 👉 Law reveals sin—it doesn’t create it. . Law given through Moses. Commandments become explicit, Sin is now clearly defined. Romans 7:7: Akin to gravity — I would not have known sin except through the law. 👉 Law is not only external (rules), and it’s also internal (conscience). Romans 2:14–15: Gentiles (without the law) still do what the law requires… because the law is written on their hearts. ✅ Law is Good, Holy, and Reveals what is right and wrong ❗ But law cannot — Save you, Fix human nature, and Stop sin completely

Torah

Law as written (Jews), and Law as conscience (Gentiles).

Jews under Mosiac Law. Extension to Gentiles. Now your key point: it extends beyond the Jews. Gentiles Period (Grafted) Romans 2:14–15 Gentiles… show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts. 👉 Gentiles don’t have the Torah, but they still experience: Moral awareness, Conscience, and inner conflict.

A person encountering explicit law (like the Torah), historically applies to Israel (the Jews) ✅ Romans 7 in its direct context fits Jewish life under the Law.
