Total Eclipse of the Sun: A Powerful Omen of Yang Transforming into Yin

On Monday, August 21st, the Moon and Earth aligned in a historical planetary event to totally block out the Sun over North America. This was one of Earth’s greatest phenomena — a rare moment where the world went completely dark in the height of summer. But beyond the astronomical spectacle lies a deeper, more sobering spiritual message.

The “Scientific Shield” of Earth’s Alignment

Earth is unique in its capacity for a total solar eclipse. Not all planets have moons, and among those that do, the “causes and conditions” are rarely so perfect. While the Moon is 400 times smaller than the Sun, it is 390 times closer to Earth. Arithmetically, this makes the size of their images almost exactly the same from our perspective.

For those three minutes of totality, the world experienced an eerie transformation: total Yang (the height of summer sun) turning into total Yin (the darkness of night).

In the language of symbols, this represents the obliteration of life or a major renewal. Is it a good or a bad sign? Ancient wise men of India and China, as well as many Native American tribes, strongly advise against watching a solar eclipse. They believe it is bad luck to watch the life-giving Sun get blocked out. Women, in particular, are traditionally warned to stay indoors during the passage of the shadow.

A Warning for the Modern World

I believe this eclipse was a warning of sorts. When we look at the current global landscape — the race riots, the outpouring of hate, and the great divide descending on the political scene — the “darkness” is already visible. With the looming possibility of nuclear conflict, it is understandable why many of us worry.

In the West, millions “camped across America” to look up at the sky, treating the event as a festival. However, the spiritual perspective is different. Buddhists and those following ancient traditions believe that such days are meant for prayer, extensive pujas, and meditation.

The Merit-Multiplying Day

In the Tibetan tradition, eclipse days are merit-multiplying days. It is believed that any prayers or practices done during these hours are extremely meritorious. We pray harder during these times not just for ourselves, but to benefit all those who may be affected by the darkening of the Sun.

We must recognize that reality is often found in what we do not see. While the world focused on the “cool” visual of the Moon’s shadow, the spiritual practitioner focused on the energetic shift. As the next solar eclipse over the U.S. is forecasted for April 2024, we must use this time to build our “Scientific Shield” of merit, protecting our world from the “silly bugs” of hate and division that thrive in the dark.
