America Has Forgotten Its Afghan Allies in Qatar

I recently spoke with a former Afghan interpreter who now lives in a camp in Qatar. His words still echo in my head: “We faced death for America. Now we are just a burden to them.”

Afghan refugees in Qatar face an uncertain future as U.S. relocations slow — painfully slow. Some families have been waiting in those desert camps for over two years. Children have been born there. And still, no American visa.

How is this acceptable?

These are not random migrants. These are the men and women who worked alongside U.S. soldiers, translators who risked being shot or bombed, embassy staff who served loyally. America promised them safety. America brought them to Qatar as a temporary stop. That “temporary” stop has become a frozen nightmare.

In my opinion, this is a shameful chapter. The world’s most powerful nation cannot process visas for 5,000 people who saved American lives?

According to UNHCR reports on Afghan refugees, the backlog grows every month. Bureaucracy, budget cuts, political indifference — call it what you want. But to those families waiting in the heat of Qatar, it feels like betrayal.

America made a promise. It is time to keep it. Read more about this in my latest article.
