What I Learned From Big Biz Duel

A masterclass on entrepreneurship, identifying foxes and tigers

You have dreams and passions. You wanted to make it big in life. You will enlist different people in your business. You trusted your people, but not everyone would be loyal to you, no matter how genuinely you treated them. When it comes to self-interests, your closest allies may still betray you.

When choosing people for your team, besides having competent skills and abilities, the crucial factor is whether that person shares similar values and principles as you do. If that person is not, he may easily dilute your brand and change your brand’s focus to his own agenda.

As he gains more power in the organisation, he may plot to do things that will hurt your company and your interests. He may also take over your CEO position one day.

When you choose the wrong person, if he is not aligned, he will not do his best. Among the partnerships I had joined, not all of them I commit fully to. Some were very misaligned. I stayed because I valued the friendship, while still being disrespected.

Identifying foxes and tigers early on would save you from having heartaches, time, and energy that would be better spent elsewhere.

Partnerships also taught me that if the founders were money-driven and not people-driven, they wouldn’t last long. The 3 partnerships I had joined none of them lasted.

They were after quick wins and profits. They gave up or didn’t have a solid foundation and direction. They were drifting while calling themselves entrepreneurs. I didn’t want to follow their footsteps. I let things happen naturally without forcing.

Over time, you will realise that having integrity is what makes your brand last. The male and female protagonists in Big Biz Duel were people-oriented, had integrity, and put profits second. They were not paper tigers; they would still remove self-interest-driven directors who kept opposing their plans to move the company forward.

I was in tears watching the 2nd last episode of Big Biz Duel. Rivals became united and genuinely cared for each other.
