During the 70s Angie Dickinson was featured in the popular TV series, Police Woman. During the series, Angie’s character, Pepper Anderson, often had to go undercover. Ironically, going undercover usually meant not being covered by very much.
But beyond Police Woman, Angie made an impression in the John Wayne classic, Rio Lobo. In addition to that, she gained some notoriety through her marriage to Burt Bacharach. With an introduction as scanty as the undercover outfits Pepper Anderson wore on Police Woman, here are some things you didn’t know about Angie Dickinson.
1: Angie was born in Kulm, North Dakota, but she and her family moved to Burbank, Californoia when she was 10.
I believe it was easier for her to get into an entertainment career in Burbank than in Klum.
2: Angie’s father ran the newspaper in Klum and was also the projectionist for the only theater in the town, until it burned down.
He also found time to commit arson on the side. Okay, that’s not at all true. Just checking to see if you are paying attention.
3: She attended Bellarmine-Jefferson High School and graduated at the age of 15.
This gave her a reputation of being a fast girl. Hold on, being told that’s not true, and to knock it off.
4: Angie was born Angeline Brown but changed her name when she married Gene Dickinson.
The marriage didn’t last, but the last name did.
5: Her TV acting debut was in the underrated, “Death Valley Days.”
She went on to appear in a number of TV westerns, including Gunsmoke, Have Gun- Will Travel, and Hec Ramsey. No wonder I like a lot of her work.
6: One of Angie’s more controversial movies was in “Big Bad Momma.”
Angie was in her 40s at the time and did several nude scenes. No doubt she was prepping for her role in Police Woman.
7: Angie also starred the 1964 movie, Killers.
This was actually Ronald Reagan’s last movie. In it he played a gangster posing as a legitimate businessman. I believe the character then went into politics. Hang on, being told that’s not right either. This has been a tough piece to write.
8: Though “Police Woman” was well received. Dickinson later expressed regret for doing the role.
She said the role didn’t pay that well and didn’t allow her enough time to pursue other opportunities. She probably could have worn less clothes for much more money in other venues.
9: According to Dickinson, her role in “Police Woman’ led to more women applying to police forces.
And probably a lot more apps at “Gentlemen’s Clubs.”
10: In 1993 she walked off the set of “This is Your Life.”
I guess if it’s her life, she could do what she wants.
11: In 2002 TV Guide ranked her the third in its list of 50 Sexiest Television Stars of All Time.”
She was behind Diana Rigg and George Clooney, who tied for first. Pepper Anderson was also named tenth sexiest TV name.
12: Angie had a 10-year on again off again relationship with Frank Sinatra.
When Frank sang, “It was a Very Good Year,’ I’m not sure which one of those years he was talking about.
13: For a while, Angie insured her legs for $1,000,000 until age made the premiums too expensive.
As we get older, at a certain point, it’s possible for some of our body parts to be overinsured.
14: She appeared in the 1960 version of “Ocean’s 11” as well as the 2001 version.
In 2001 she played herself in the movie. In 1960 version he played Danny Ocean/Frank Sinatra’s wife. Maybe that was within that 10 year on again off again relationship.
15: She originally didn’t want to star in “Dressed to Kill” because she thought she had become somewhat of a role model after her work in “Police Woman.”
And she had really gotten over that idea by the time she did Big Bad Mamma II.
