Spirituality in the Big City

Still connected with nature

Author Fran Lebowitz summed up what many urban dwellers feel:

“I am not the type who wants to go back to the land; I am the type who wants to go back to the hotel.”

I like the city, too, and adapt my spiritual encounters with nature to something more manageable than surviving off the grid or hiking a trail requiring an Olympic athlete’s stamina.

Public parks and botanical gardens can inspire awe. Looking mindfully at the mountains or the ocean can be transformative without having to climb the peaks or sail the waves.

How does spirituality work anyway? It works in our heads and our hearts. When I see the full moon in the night sky from our apartment balcony, I’m moved by the wonder and mystery of existence. I feel immense gratitude. That’s spiritual enough for me.
