How Manipur’s conflict between two communities has now drawn in a third.

It’s been over a year since we talked about Manipur.

Since May 2023, Manipur has been caught in a serious conflict between two communities: the Meiteis and the Kuki-Zotribes. The situation is still far from resolved, but it has, mercifully, shown signs of easing and returning to normalcy.

Unfortunately, even as the wounds between the Meiteis and Kukis were beginning to heal, another long-standing conflict has resurfaced. This one is between the Kukis and the Nagas. And this too is not a new dispute. Its roots go back to the years around India’s independence, and even earlier.

Over the centuries, Manipur (like much of Northeast India) has largely been overlooked. Some even confuse it with Manipal in Karnataka! For the last few years, this state has been struggling to get the attention it needs.
